I come from a Nikon F3HP back ground and was thinking about a M7 with a 28mm lens. I am not real familiar with how a rangefinder works. Can I have the rangefinder hung around my neck and with the lens pre-focused and press the shutter without looking through the view finder? I mean just take a guess at what I am shooting at.

Right, in that respect it would work just like an F3. You can pick a manual focus point to cover the range of distances you anticipate targets will fall within, making the shot very fast. No need to use the viewfinder if you can accept the very approximate framing. :)

For when you DO choose to use the finder, I'd pick the .58x finder magnification for the M7 as particularly suited to concentration on the 28mm lens. I comfortably use a 28 'cron on my CLE which has a .6x finder, and the 28mm framelines are easy to see, and usefully even some around the outside.

Welcome to the forum Mark! Great to see another member from Ecuador! :)

As Richard said, the quick answer is yes. I also have an F3HP background and got used to a Leica M pretty quickly. I do not wear glasses and use a 0.72mag M7 with my 28mm lens, if you wear glasses you might want to try a 0.58mag as Doug suggests. At least you should try one in the shop...

I would like to thank everyone for all there help. I do want to get a M7 with a wide angle. When I am out in the street I use my F3HP with MD-4 hung around my neck and my jacket out side to cover it. I do like to take photos not even looking in the view finder, and just shoot. It is fun. Living here in Quito, is very different. I am always careful. I shoot in the early morning with my dog.
When I get back to North America I will go to a Leica Dealer. Today was a surprise for me, a book store had a english copy of America Photo! (Oct, Nov. issue) It made my day. I will keep on reading these forums and abserve and learn. Thank you rangefinderforum!!!!
