After coming home with my newly acquired summitar, I found nothing better to do than playing with it, and I somehow managed to stuck it in collapsed position.:bang:

Not sure what to do with it now. I do not want to use brute force, especially since I don't know in which direction to turn to unlock it...

With the lens facing up, when I turn counter-clokwise, the front element starts to unscrew.

How I am supposed to extend the summitar?

Thanks

I just took out my Summitar to refresh my memory. There is a shallow groove that keeps the lens aligned when it is collapsed. I have seen some lenses where the lens has been rotated enough to gouge the barrel. Be careful in moving it. If I look at the lens from the base end, I cannot see what engages the slot, so it must be well inside the base ring.

You don't turn the lens to extend till it is fully extended. Then you turn it to lock it in place. If you collapsed the lens before turning it you may have damaged the guide pin that rides in the groove.

Try pulling straight out to extend the lens. Then it should turn clockwise to lock.

Thanks OldNick. I'll be careful moving it. When it is in collapsed position, with the lens facing up, in which direction do you turn it to unlock it?
Counter-clockwise probably, looking at the bottom gauge (I expect the top gauge to be the same, vertical on the left side of the horizontal one).

colyn, I turned the lens after collapsing. I kind of cliked in place, and is now stuck there.
When I lock the lens into the infinity position, collapsed of course, the 2 meters mark (it's a 39 Summitar with distance in meters) is aligned with the vertical gauge, maybe a tiny hair on it's left. Is it supposed to be there?

What a noob I am, destroying a lens 30 minutes after buying it :(

Sounds like the pin has come out of the groove. I would leave it alone and take it to a repairman otherwise you could break the pin.

The infinity mark should be aligned instead of the 2 mtr mark. As I stated above you should take it to a repairman for fixing.

Definitely needs an expert's attention. There's supposed to be a tiny ball bearing on the end of the locater pin and sometimes it goes missing when a beginner takes the lens apart. This ball bearing is needed to keep the pin in the proper position in the grooves. Don't force anything.
