What's a decent SLR and lens combo you can get for $40 (trolling on eBay)

I just picked up a maxxum 7000 and 50 1.7 for $25, but I think I got lucky
Maxxum with the 35-70 f4 are cheap too

What can you guys think of?

Ask it another way - which SLR/lens kit on ebay costs less than lithium battery (or adapter w/ silver battery) it takes?

For shelving or shooting? I took it for shooting.

Similar to SLR kit my family have used and it is still in usable condition. It gave us not decent, but great family pictures. We switched to digital at home after this camera, few years later I scanned negatives from this Canon EOS Rebel kit and... started to shot with film again.

Minolta X300/X370 w/ 50mm lens.

I was going to say the same. I picked up an X500 with the 58mm 1.7 for roughly that price last year in near new condition. And as much as it pains me to say it, the end results are indistinguishable from my M2 or M3.

That 58mm lens is wonderful.

I've found non-F Spotmatics with 55mm f/1.8 Super-Takumars in that price range. Spotmatic SP500 in particular can be an absolute steal.

If you're really lucky you might find an SL with lens for that amount.

Mamiya 500/1000 TL/DTL. Cheap, common, robust. Nice lenses too. You could probably find a working one for under $30 if lucky. These also work fine without mercury batteries unlike most of its contemporaries.

Pentax ME or (better) ME Super can usually be found for around that price. More modern and plastic? Minolta Maxxum 5's with the kit lens are going for that price these days. Lots of features on those. But there are so many great ones out there.

Hmm, some 50s are creeping up in asking price, probably for the "intro to fast prime" genre

Any of the kit/standard zooms decent and cheap?
Minolta 35-70, Nikon 35-105 (not really THAT cheap)

The Vivitars like the 220 go for dirt cheap. Yashicas that aren't the top models.

I just bought 3 SLRs with lenses (Yashica FX2, two Spotmatics) from separate auctions on Goodwill this week that went for $25 with shipping each, even with their ridiculously high shipping costs. Thought I would get over-bid but didn't, so now I have a bunch more SLR gear to move on to people that will use it.

EU: Praktica Nova. Also the LTL and MTL types but those are less sturdy. And Revuenon cameras that are rebranded Chinons or Ricohs or Yashicas. Both in M42 and PK types.
