Can anyone tell me which of the Leitz lens shades can work with a Summar? I know there was a dedicated shade for it, but it seems to cost its weight in gold. In particular, can I use a FIKUS shade adjusted all the way down to the bottom without vignetting? It appears that the FIKUS was the recommended shade for the old rigid Summar, which is as far as I know identical with the collapsible one except for the mount, so I am assuming this should be OK.

Cheers,

Do you use a filter with your Summar? If not, you can use a FISON. The prices for them on eBay are crazy right now but they often sell cheap when they do sell.

Edit: I have a filter permanently on my Summar so the FISON caused a bit of vignetting. I eventually found a moderately priced FOOKH and have been using it. That works well with the Summaron too.

Thanks, Brian. I have just bought the Summar, and haven't received it yet; I'm just getting prepared to try it out.
My previous experience with Summars has not been all that positive. I understand that bokeh lovers are enamoured of the Summar. As I recall from my last attempts with it, it produced nice bokeh, in fact the whole image looked like bokeh.
I already have a FIKUS which is in no danger of being considered a pristeen collector's item, and which I think cost me about 20 bucks last year. I will make a point of using it. To be fair, I found my old Summar to be reasonably sharp in the centre, but the low contrast and tendency to flare with the least possible excuse masks the sharpness pretty well. It's time for me to give it another try- hopefully the front element isn't too badly scratched as is so often the case.

Cheers,

The only time I've had vignetting with a FIKUS on a 35mm Elmar and an A36 clamp-on filter fixed between them.
No trouble with the Summar and the FIKUS at the 50mm mark. Even with a filter.

Keep it simple and cheap.

This chap sells a screw in hood that works for the Summar (without filters) and is very neat.

(No connection, I think he's on Ebay too)

I think it may be the 34mm one, others will advise. I have one and the last time I used a Summar it did the job.

Yes, that 34mm screw-in hood looks like one that I have, and it's fine on my Summar.

Hi,

I'll second that but any old 36mm slip on for a 50mm lens will do the trick. Trouble is, wicked dealers know 36mm fits Leitz gear and up the price. So look in flea markets or else go to JtH.

The ordinary FISON will do but may cause vignetting; not that the Summar will be used wide open often. The Leitz hood for the Summar is a SOOMP and weighs a ton. Like the Summitar one it's a display item imo.

Regards, David

I have a 35mm f2.8 with a lens hood. When I shoot I use the lens with the shade and a uv filter but when I carry the camera around I would still like to use a lens cap just in case I bump something. Does anyone have suggestions?
