RFF incurs several thousand dollars of expenses throughout the year to keep the site running. Server hosting, software purchases, endless hours spent in management, prizes and continuous improvements to the site just to name a few. Becoming an RFF premium member is the best way to help run the site.

Although regular forum membership is free and has a lot to offer, Premium membership has its benefits as well

The standard upload limit to the gallery is 5 images per day. With the premium membership, this limit increases to 20 uploads per day. In addition to the increased upload count, your file size also increases to 350k.

You get unlimited posts in the well organized classified section which allows you to sell your items.

Your private message inbox limit increases from 20 messages to 100.

Every now and then a sponsor offers a fantastic deal to premium members.

The membership costs are only $25.00 per year and can be paid via Pay Pal or Credit Card.

One of the small changes coming with the new ownership is that Premium Membership is no longer needed to help run the forum, nor donations. RFF will solely rely on revenues from sponsors and classified ads to stay up. That being the case, no more Premium Memberships will be accepted. Those who have Premium Membership now will retain the benefits which were acquired when upgrading their original membership. In addition to this, once your existing membership expires, yo will retain your Icon showing support for the forum in the growth days 🙂

I wish to express a big thank you to those that helped the forum. Your contributions helped keep RFF up and running.

It also means that the people who were able to get there first have a lot of extra features, free (such as classifieds ads which were free to premium members were they not?), forever.

Feels like a bit of a hierarchy will come of this, or a class system.

There isn't any opportunity now to change what category you fall into.

Well, there are changes in place and the intent is to get everyone back to square one. The only way to do that is to let the current premium memberships expire. Yes, the current PMs will retain their benefits until expiration, then they will revert back to,.... what is the correct term, they will revert back to RFF members.... Nobody wants RFF to become a tiered community and by all means possible we will not. We do have to respect the current benefits offered to those who have financially supported RFF, but going forward Stephen has made the determination that this is no longer necessary.

Now, what happens then, I don't know, in theory that is a year from now, let's deal with today. The intent though is to say thank you to those who have been able to help the site, and then in a short period of time we will all be back on square one.
 
Yes, thanks Rover. That does clarify the situation. It all sounds perfectly sensible to me - I never really liked the two tiered system anyway....
 
I don't think Stephen knows what will happen or if there will be another change in the future regarding this, but I know he wants to let things run down. Deal with some things he would like to see now, and deal with that in the future.

Stephen has communicated with us mods quite a bit and everything he talks about are ways to improve RFF without making changes to our community. The fact that everyone is vocal and cares about what happens here is a real positive.
 
What other website has turned away money? While I have no qualm with the idea of premium membership, the honesty and frankness of the new ownership is to be greatly commended. Hurrah for Steve.

I just became one of the last people to pay for what's becoming a free service, no?

Just bemoaning my rotten timing, that's all. 😉

Kevin M, I wish I had your problem. I have a pay pal reciept that says I paid for Premium membership, but it has not been enabled. I am currently stuck with the 150K image size. I have a folder on my Hard drive "waiting for premium membership" with a large file in it. I don't know when I will be able to upload that.
 
I only very recently became a premium member, holding out on principle until the site ownership changed hands. I'm still happy to support a site like this. $25 is worth what I get from RFF. Even if it's no longer necessary, that's fine, it just means that RFF is healthy and will continue.

in answer to your question, not at all.

Most Premium Membership benefits are NOT now free.
the diferences of free selling ads vs $2 each and of more uploads per day (until your membership expires) are still there.

I am looking into increasing the standard mailbox size from 20 to 50 as on the Premium, but that has not been decided yet.

if you want to cancel your Premium Membership and get a refund since you just paid, no problem.

Stephen are you at all thinking of keeping some sort or membership? As I noted earlier it has been of benefit to me in regard to the classifieds. I would much prefer it to a pay as you post system. I hate to say it but the pay as you post reminds me of the evil place.
