I have just come across an article on a new type of IOL (intra ocular lens) which is reported to permanently correct for vision defects, and which also restores corrected sight at all focal lengths after cataract surgery. Paywall-protected article (UK Telegraph) here. They are called TECNIS Symfony Intraocular lenses. Manufacturer's site here. London Eye Hospital information here.

This sounds very promising for those of us with ageing eyes struggling to achieve correct focus with rangefinder patches!

The reports are that the new lens implants also provide improved colour vision as well as correction for both close, mid, and far distance vision. They do not need replacing, i.e. it's a permanent fix.

Edit: I have no association with the manufacturer or anyone else in relation to this. Just passing on potentially good news to those of us who might benefit.

That's a very interesting device. Here is another entry into that category I recently learned about.

NPR had this article a couple months ago.
Not a lens implant but rather an iris...As I understand it, the surgery has the potential to permenetly make your eye a couple "stops" slower giving great DOF and as a result... restoring near field vision.
It's a cool idea. The US is always slow to adopt these things with FDA trials and all.
Personally I'm nervous about surgeries but would consider this if it had a 99% rate of success.
