I sent my 35 lux to a dealer for an appraisal and offer, when it went it was mint I checked it over, I included a price I wanted for it.

The dealer called when he received it and offered a hundred under the price because there was a large piece of black carbon on the rear element and it needed cleaning, this definitely was not there when it left me but could of been jostled loose in transit so I said yes on the phone, he said he would send me an agreement to sign before he could send me the cheque.

later I decided I wanted to see the lens for myself, (he had offered to send me a picture but I had initially declined) and called to ask for the return of the lens, he informed me he had sold it, I was shocked and asked how he could sell it when I had not signed the agreement and he went on the defensive and said we had a verbal agreement and so he sold the lens; I asked how he could sell it so quickly if it needed a cla? The conversation escalated into an argument during which he insulted me on quite a few occasions saying in all his experience he'd never encountered such an unreasonable customer, I thought my questions were quite reasonable etc... I eventually apologised for getting annoyed and ended the call (he did not apologise).

I now feel very aggrieved by the situation. has anyone had a similar situation am I out if order? Is this unusual? What to do?

He played you to get an extra hundred bucks, but got caught in the act and didn't have the courage to admit it.

Next time send the dealer pictures/description of what you have for sale first and discuss asking price, his fee, etc.

I think by sending him the lens you have firmly "put the ball in his court".

I see you've been a member here since Nov 2009. Why didn't you try to sell it here?

Anytime you involve a dealer to sell your used item you're incurring some sort of fee, etc. There is a classifieds area on this forum.

There is, i don't use Paypal so i cant list. I've thought a lot about this and getting stressed about it is useless, if the guy wants to conduct his business in an underhand way that's up to him.

I have heard of this several times before and even of specific smaller dealers using it as routine "oh, we used a birght light and you have cleaning marks/fungus/trees growing in there'

The clue is in the haste.

Thanks, I phoned them and they said I made a verbal contract and should honour it, which I will, I now feel very naive! Oh well you live and learn.

Bad situation. Unfortunately, with the price that used Leica lenses in good condition are going for nowadays, I think the dealer got a lot more than an extra hundred bucks (he probably sold the lens for more than what the OP had as his asking price).

To the OP, there are people that sell here that don't use PayPal. It takes a bit longer but it seems to work for them.

Mark,
I aggravate with you. Greed made some people behave in a tragically sad way, and felt justified to do so.

In the future, please remember this, there is no better person to appraise your gear than yourself, the amount of research you had to do will only pay off in the long run.
