Test of Xpan with Nikon 28mm shift lens

Here're some test photos of using a Nikon 28mm shift lens with an adapter on my Xpan. The image after cropping the vignetted corners is approx 24x62mm - losing 3mm of length.

The scans are from a flatbed at 2400dpi, so don't expect to see much more than the effect of cropping the vignetted corners.

Sharpness looks OK, but will have to do more testing.

The adapter was bought from a Dutch Hasselblad repair specialist, but he says Hasselblad won't sell him anymore Xpan mounts to build the adapter with.

About the same as my Pentax28mm shift coverage, mind you I already had the lens!
What are you using for a viewfinder?

Hi Clive,

I'm using the 15mm CV viewfinder, with 4.5mm tape top and bottom as a mask. Still learning how to account for the crop when framing a composition.

Good luck with the R-D1. Bought any digital-crop external viewfinders for it yet? Cameraquest has them in stock.

Well I have 21, 15 and 12 CV lenses, I plan on using my 28mm, 21mm and 15mm finders with them and seeing how it goes of course 28, 35 and 50 frame lines are in the VF.
All a bit scary really................................it will be in NYC when i get there for photoplus.............................

Clive, remember that this camera has a 1.5x crop - the 15mm will only have the equivalent field of view of a 22.5mm lens - so your 15mm viewfinder will be misleading you.

The internal framelines are "converted" - the framelines for a 28mm lens show the equivalent view of a 42mm lens.

These are the digital equivalent viewfinders Cosina has made for the R-D1.

Yes, so the 15 can use your regular 21 finder. I bought a used 21D on eBay for 80 bucks and the combo of the two 21's seem to work fine.

Is there going to be a "RFF get together" at Photo plus?

Exactly , so the 28mm finder with 21mm lens,21mm finder with 15mm, and the 15mm with 12mm.
No exact but I think it will work OK.
I'll be the English guy at photoplus wearing a voigtlander t-shirt!

This is great! I'm sure the Nikkor wasn't cheap, but you must have saved compared to the 'blad 30mm!

I've been meaning to ask the question regarding mount adapters for the Xpan for a while. One thing that stops me taking my Xpan out as much as I should is the f4 limit of the glass. I've often thought if I could mount a decent f2 35mm lens on it (just for 36x24 coverage), it would be a far more useful camera for me. I would be interested in aquiring one of these adapters - it's sad news you think the repait specialist won't be able to make them anymore.

I presume there is no rangefinder coupling?

Correct, no rf coupling. With the 28mm lens, scale focusing is practical, and with the 15mm external viewfinder mounted, it looks like a giant Bessa-L!

There were some threads on photo.net where some guy was trying to build an adapter WITH RF coupling!

The Nikkor cost just over $600, the adapter 220 euros, plus a 15mm viewfinder if you don't have one.
