If you are interested in testing the possible future home of RFF, please feel free to do so and provide your feedback on performance. This will be done using DSLReXchange website which resides on the development server. However, in order to do this, you must trick your computer into pointing somewhere else when you go to DSLReXchange. To do so follow these very simple steps if you are running windows.

1. Find your hosts file. Typically it is located here:

C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

2. Edit this file using Notepad. Its a very small text file.

3. Add the following two lines to the end of the file:

66.249.3.74 www.dslrexchange.com
66.249.3.74 dslrexchange.com

4. Save this file.

5. close and restart your browser.

At your convenience, please visit dslrexchange and report on its performance.

Now when you use your web browser to visit dslrexchange, instead of going to where DNS says it should be you will be taken to the server whos ip address is specifyed above.

As always, your help is extremely apprecaited.

Works well for me. Got the hosts file edited and then pulled up your "if you see this" message.

Much faster for me. No hiccups as I browse either. Need to get a number of us on there for a real test however.

On there right now. Speed seems better but not setting any speed records. It's a about 1sec between pics on the gallery, threads come up in a couple of secs.

William,

There should be a thread called "This webpage is on a test site" did you see that thread?

I didn't see any difference in speed--at least not enough to measure

I saw the message

No difference in speed. Does that mean its about the same as the old stuff or its aboutthe same as that really bad service provider from yesterday?

Yes. The response for me was very snappy. Then again, on my DSL line I have almost never had speed issues here. The database white page of doom :bang: , yes, but not speed issues.

By the way, this site will probably slow downa little tonight while I transfer the gallery images 🙁

Jorge,

It seems faster to me using a cable modem, but it isn't getting the volume that this site does, so it may be a bit of a false positive.

Well, when we were on the reallyslow server yesterday, I had migrated htd as well and the trffic on that was next to nothing. Its performance was very poor yesterday. tonight it seems a lot faster. Lets see what happens over night and tomorrow.

its angry that i am dumping it and now it wants to perform 🙂 No idea Joe. nothing has changed from before the takedown a few days ago.

The "fiasko" Server was as fast as the original one in the beginning, but degraded horribly :-(.

I have to trick my proxy server into using the ip address today and I can run some speed tests later this evening, say 20:00 UTC.

Those look like a DoS attack, so I wait for admission 🙂

phototone, it is not a "win" file it's the "hosts" file. This is part of the TCP/IP stack which even macs use for some time now 🙂
