How hard are the Fujica 670/690 series (the 'Texas Leica') to work on yourself? Anyone done it? Online resources that you can link me to?
I may have to let go of a well-loved camera and would consider a G690 off eBay if it can be serviced at home...

I did not yet have the need to do that... but there seems to be a couple of tutorials online. Check this one for example:

Easy to work on, except for the viewfinder, the prisms and lenses are glued in place, and are very hard to get apart if your viewfinder/rangefinder is hazy.

I guess it depends on what you mean by "work on". We used to have a sign in our auto dealership shop that said "We don't work on cars, we fix them". The other sign said "Labor rate is $20 an hour (this was way back when), $50 an hour if you worked on it first, and $200 an hour if you want to watch". Nothing more annoying than the latter.
I've had those cameras apart, but never had to go very far into them. Some things are easy to access and fix, some are not. The shutter noise on both my GS645s and 690III drove me absolutely crazy, to the point that I had to sell the cameras (the 690 was also sold because it was just too darned big. No, it was actually huge). I never did figure out a way to get rid of that loud "clack", which was really frustrating because a leaf shutter itself is nearly silent. I have no idea why Fuji made those cameras like that.

Flattered this is getting some use
Could you tell us what the problem is? I've never seen inside the lens assembly/shutter but aside from that, most things are accessible after the top plate is removed.

Frontman,
Thanks for the info. Sorry to say the problem I'm having with the fat Fuji is the left bright line finder is too dim to see. Also the focusing is poor. This one may have to go in for repair.
I've called Frank Marshman camera repair, twice and left a message with no response. I got the link for this service from Scapevision above. Not impressed.
