I wanted to publicly thank Greyhoundman and Kim Coxon for their assistance in helping me restore my recently acquired QL17 (larger Old School version). I just finished the job after dinner this evening. Even with slightly blurry skunk irritated eyes. (Damn those mustilidae)

G-Man provided considerable guidance, advice and even pictoral instructions. Kim sent three screws all the way from the UK at his expense.

I now have a functioning QL fitted with a lens hood found on the 'bay. I also have a battery that will give me 1.35 volts.

Muchas Gracias, Kim and G-man. Also, thanks to all the others who gave a little advice here and there.

Bob,

Just in case you run into battery problems, I'm working with Kim on a design for an adapter to allow the use of a modern SR44 in place of the PX1a needed for the old style QL17. I should have a prototype with Kim later this week and will let you know how we get on.

Hi Bob and John,
I don't know which battery your camera uses. The Canonet S (QL17 without the QL!) and the early QL17's used the PX1a but the later series of early QL17 used the more normal 625. I don't know when the change occured but if anyone has more info, I would like to hear.

No problem with the screws. There is no point in having a forum like this unless we can help each other out and as yet my contribution is miniscule compared with the likes of Jon Goodman, Greyhoundman and others who have helped a lot more people (including me. 😉 )

I wish to contribute to this post by also thanking Kim Coxon for sending me another piece of his Canonet 🙂 namely, the battery check button + backside viewfinder window assembly.
The rest of the busted Canonet was recovered (bending metal, replacing front windows from canonet28) but this one was a last missing piece. Now it's full again, and hopefully working good.
Thanks!

EDIT: i can only show the Canonet before the recovery; it's the one on the bottom right. You can see the dent on the top plate (still visible but straight now) and the broken front window. Also, there are a few irrepairable spots on the front lens element but i don't care too much about them, they should not degrade image quality.

Hi Bob,
If the adapter doesn't work out, a good alternative is a 1/3AA NiCd. They fit perfectly, are about the right voltage and rechargeable!! Trouble is you may need to build or modify a charger and you are a bit stuck if they die on you away from home.

If the battery design works count me as a customer. I'll post my first images from the camera next week.

I hope Greyhoundman gets to see the thread today.
