The guy standing funny to get his shot...

In Cambridge last week we walked into a crowd of tourists. One guy was doing just that, with the added excellence of the digicam at arm's length composing on the screen.

It looks even funnier in real life!

It always reminds me of the back cover of a Madness album I have around here somewhere. Wish I had an example to show you, but it's a ringer.

This thread reminded me of something I read on the photoethnolgy site. In the definition of terms they describe "chimping" as a person who has just shot a picture with a digital camera and is looking very intently at the view screen on the back and waving their arms to friends to look at the shot.

I of course never "chimp". My Minolta Z-1 has a switch on the back so I can review the previous shot through the view finder screen and thus never"chimp" in public.
😀

It's not that far off horse stance, actually, for people who train in martial arts or watch a lot of kung fu films (though the feet aren't even in that shot 🙂 )

It must be an obese horse stance or a hippopotamus stance.

I do a lot of chimping in public! It's best done with a couple of girls on a sofa ...

I was thinking just the same, I'm a real amateur in Kung Fu (I started 2 months ago) but I already know that position. 😎 And I've got a very good master, SiFu Lo. Does this mean that I could also take photographs in the praying mantis attack position? 😀

There was an email passed around by my oriental friends... it's almost all orientals, especially CJK's that do this, and the funny positions get even funnier.

Bill, it's gotta be this one...

Actually, I was looking for it online last night - it is the back or the inside cover of "Madness 7" I think...it shows the horse stance quite clearly.

Different disciplines have different "horse stances". Isshin-Ryu, in which I trained, had a shoulder-width stance. Wado had a much wider stance. The horse stance is usually the beginning point of any exercise or kata.
