My Mamiya Universal has been sitting on a shelf for a few years. My 100 and 65 had shutter problems and Mamiya Universal stuff was a bit much. I've been seeing some nice stuff with instant Fujifilm pack film. I never liked the colors on the Polaroid pack film but I wanted to try some Fujifilm. It seems Mamiya Universal prices have fallen. I picked up a Polaroid back and the 127/4.7 lens that covers the pack film (45mm equiv.) It also came with a mask that lets me use it with the 6x9 film back (55mm equiv.) until I get my 100 fixed. I'm loving the colors of the Fujifilm instant film. I have a 100 ISO black and white back and a 3000 ISO black and white pack ready to test. More pictures, and more to come, on my Flickr set: Fujifilm instant film

This is a really nice system, with a lot of modular flexibility. I've been collecting spare parts for a while now. The "S" shaped rollfilm backs are incredible pieces of machinery, and supposedly hold film flatter than other types.

We should keep this quiet, of course. Oops, too late.

Cheers,

The dock and flower shots on your flickr set look a little muted and old school. Not sure if its the film or the lens, but very nice in any case.

zuikologist -- I guess it would be more accurate to say film and paper since it is all of a piece. This is Fuji's version of Polaroid peel apart pack film. Only they seem to have done a better job on the color. It does have it's own look. I like it. You end up with these little prints. The paper is 3 1/4" x 4 1/4" and the border is about 1/4" all around the print. When I finish this color pack I have two b&w packs to shoot. I will be playing around with the color some more!

Yes, that chopped body with the external VF looks like the Hassy SWC... Post some results when you can, I remember when I was a boy, my father , who was using Rolleiflexes at the time, presented me a fellow photographer who was using the Mamiya Press, and they concurred that Mamiya lenses were sharper than Zeiss Planar !

Thanks for posting this Gordon.

My Universal has been sitting around unused for the last little while (been loving the 7II) and I'd been wondering if I should sell it or not. Perhaps it's time to pull it out and run some Fuji. It's a beast as you say and the lenses are nice as well.

cheers,

Fred

I use the Fujiroid 100 Color in my Hasselblad Instant back, and it's fun to use, and useful, too. Much cheaper than a medium-format digital back :)

I once bought such a camera for $25, after which I sold it for $50.

Your set-up looks ultra cool. Thanks fpr sharing it with us here.

I love my Polaroid 600 SE, it evens out my collection.
I wonder what the difference is between the Mamiya lenses for the Universal, and
the ones commissioned for Polaroid 600

I recently purchased a Universal Press witht he 127mm lens and love this camera. I was thinking about getting the 75mm lens, does this cover the instant film as well???
Thanks,

John

Thanks for the info Gordon. I bought the Mamiya & a Polaroid 110a/b converted to use instant pack film, and the Mamiya fits my shooting style to a tee, so that's the camera I will keep. It would be nice to have access to the 400 & 500 speed Fuji films but am happy with what I can get (FP-100c, FP-3000b) and am learning to coax good pictures from them.....

The 75 covers 6X12 and (almost) 4x5

Thanks, John

I used the 75 (red dot) on a Gowland Pocket 4x5 and with no movements at infinity, it vignettes a bit on a full sheet of film.

It will absolutely cover polaroid pack, as will the 50. Results for the 50 on 4X5 show a bit more vignetting than the 75. The red dot I mentioned was put on the 75's intended for the 600SE, but I don't really think the optics for the 75 without the red dot are different. The non red dot 75 was found on the Mamiya Breech mounts, which are different from the Polaroid 600SE mounts.
