I just a bit ago check out my Cart at Adorama to see the status of shipping on the X100S. Notice the line on Taxes

Cart Summary
CartSubtotal: $1299.00
Shipping & Handling: Free
Taxes: $115.29 GRAND TOTAL: $1414.29
So, I'm in PA for now; not in NJ or NY under any circumstance. Order placed from PA. So looks as though the long arm of some government has gotten hold of another revenue source. For the heck of it, I ran an order through B&H. No sales tax came up in my cart.
One more "tax free" source down the tubes. Thankfully I live close enough to Delaware when I've over here, although I'm told DE just boosts the retail price by the amount equivalent to the sales tax - not a bad move, eh?

The best camera is one that still works!
There have been moves in Australia to change the threshold at which private imports attract tax ... currently it's $1000.00.
Most of the impetus has come from greedy retailers who are making a motza out of us ... and don't want that to change.

Actually, out of state buyers have always been obligated to pay a USE TAX for online purchases if you had a local sales tax and if your state has reciprocity with the seller's state . The use tax is equal to your local sales tax. Have you bought anything from Amazon lately? They've just finally gotten around to enforcing it.

I'd rather see the end of off-shore tax havens and corporate tax avoidance first.

no taxes in Alberta back alley, but a lot of wasteful spending when times were good. I am sure the current Alberta government is thinking about adding one though.

Free ride? It have never been free, that is, not one have sent you free goodies. Matter of fact is someone is charging you additionally when you have opened wallet to pay for what you wanted to get. How this money is spent? To make drones flying over your heads. Hello, brave new world, you are paying for your chains.

Hmmm.... their written "Sales Tax Policy" specifically says New York and New Jersey. Maybe they just opened a store in Pa somewhere and just haven't got around to revising their website?? Or maybe they're just testing you to see if they can get away with it? :-o

Are you sure you used your PA address. Doesn't sound right.

Yep, confirmed my Zip and it's "stored" in account correctly as well. Helen Oster, the ombudsman on Fred Miranda, is checking it out. She says in a post on FM that it is incorrect and will get the IT folks there to see what happened.

We bought a couple of tee-shirts from USA for my wife's sister. Total Cost about $30. We live in the UK. The package was side-tracked by HM Revenue & Customs. The Post Office then sent us a note to collect the items from their depot but they'd only release them to us if we paid the HMRC another £20 (around $30) for import duty they'd "estimated".
The British government is probably one of the most efficient when it comes to screwing its own citizens who import stuff from abroad.

It's filling the potholes in some street that I'll never travel on that gets my goat. I used to purchase the bulk of my chemistry locally and paid the sales tax. When that became impossible because there is no local camera store I started shopping in NH, which has no sales tax. Now that those two shops have either closed or stopped carrying chemistry I must mail order. Paying sales tax to fix the roads in NYC is fine if I'm traveling to NYC, but I really don't see the point for mail order. Well I do see the point, every government is strapped for cash in the US, I just don't like it.
The VT tax form has a space (as I'm sure many state forms do) for telling the state how much sales tax you avoided and paying it.

No provincial tax, but GST I'd still charged on things bought here or shipped here. But much lower sales tax burden for sure.

Well, the Sales Tax glitch on Adorama's site appears to have been a joint function of Adorama changing its checkout templates and my use of Safari 6.0.3. Using the latests version of Chrome, no such sales tax was added. I've informed Adorama, following their request, by providing screens shots of the results from each browser. Thanks to Helen Oster and Ken Rockwell.
Now, back to watching the Military channel

Right -- just did my income taxes and the State of Connecticut, for one, cares very much about online/mail order purchases where you're not charged sales tax. So better to pay it as you go than get hit with "use tax" when you file.
