The Future Of Film by Zeiss.

In someways I found this article more interesting than the lens announcement. To be sure it is corporate propagand to a certain extent, but obviously they do, as a corporation, believe that film will be around in the medium term.

Oh, Bill ...

As a fan of film cameras (although I also shoot some digital) I do take some comfort in these words.

However, I would not expect a spokesperson for either Fuji of Kodak to say anything other than what they told Zeiss. First off, the representatives may not know what their respective firm's strategic aims are. Second of all, even if they do know, they are unlikely to tell a third party who will tell it to the world as Zeiss is doing.

As with all of these threads regarding the future (or death) of film - time will tell.

I think Fuji will be sticking with film. If they were intending otherwise they would not have agreed (along with Ilford and JandC) to be one of the sponsors of the upcoming APUG Conference.

This is nice to see and I have little if any doubt that Fuji will "stick" with film for the near-term future. However, the Zeiss statement spoke in terms of years and years. I wish my crystal ball was a clear as theirs!

As I said - only time will tell.

It sounds too much like the proverbial 'vote of confidence' given to a coach or manager before he is canned. Film will not disappear any time soon, however, the number and variety of choices will continue to decline.

I was impressed by the Ziess announcements, mostly from the point of view that they have an overall corporate vision and direction towards producing high-quality, high-performance, film based products.

"meet the Mets, meet the Mets! Come on out and greet the Mets!"

I think Honus nailed it on the head. I see maybe a high and low speed film in each chemistry type, maybe in just one frame count, not 12, 24 & 36.

I think even if Kodak and Fuji got out of it, there will still be small manufacturers of B&W film in bulk rolls.

Didn't Kodak in the last few years make a new B&W film plant in Mexico. Even if they lose money, they'll sell off the assests, and someone will probably buy it at a price that will allow them to meet the current demand.

The worse case scenario is a lot fewer emulsions, no new technology, higher prices, maybe stock outs due to a company running only one film at a time through production.

I've got too many film bodies not to!

I agree with George & Robert, but the Kodak manager speaking to Zeiss is in disagreement with his CEO, who has publically stated "film is dead". I had recently decided to give Kodak another chance and starting using Tri-X again, but then I read Perez' statement. My gut instict is, "OK, buddy, I'll take my business elsewhere." As if he'd care.

george,
i moved to the frozen north in jan of '72 so it was my first summer away was in '72.
plus i was a yankee fan!

Actually, I think I was off a year and it was 1973.

Whatever.

I have to figure with a name like Rizzuto you have to be a Yankees fan! 😀 As am I nowadays - but back then it was another story - before Mrs. Payson traded away Koosman, Seaver and McGraw! She lost me forever with that move!

BTW: Did your move north have anything to do with a "low number" or was it a lady that drew you up?

Okay to some extent - but Folks, let's get a grip here. If you were Zeiss. And you just introduced the Cosina-built Zeiss Ikon film camera body. Would YOU say anything other than what is on the website?

After all, it is not merely a "self serving" statement - it is a "self preservation" one.

Have you tried the B&W film called, "Lucky?" It's Chinese made Tri-X, and cheaper. 😎
