But ... with the new D4S on the market a used D4 is looking rather interesting as a replacement for my D700 for shooting classic moto-x meetings. Not to mention the advantages of ten frames per second and video even!

It was a demonstration of Muay Thai at the Martial Arts school where I train and help teach Brazilian jiu-jitsu, so yes, I did indeed get that close. On the M8 a 35 is more like a 50, so it gives you a bit more distance from the subject.

Nice! I recently acquired an Elmarit-M 135/2.8, which I plan to try for sports photography on my M9 -- hope I'll have your "luck"....
