ok, i normally shoot jpeg high on the rd1.

i use photoshop elements 6 to post process.
i shoot in colour, convert to b&w, use levels, unsharp mask and resize to 2700 on the long side and save as a jpeg.

if i shoot raw, i open the file with epson raw, and move it to photoshop, i convert to greyscale as the convert to b&w option is not open to me. i then use levels, unsharp mask, resize and save. BUT it will not allow me save as a jpeg. if i save it any other way it will then not allow me to open the file to post it to the web. i can open it to continue processing but that seems to be it.

i actually don't mine how the jpegs look so i have never bothered with raw but i think it's time i learn something new.

can anyway help?

joe

Why are you opening the file in Epson RAW and then moving it to PS? I just open the files directly in PS or Lightroom, generally Lightroom. Then I can export it however I like! I don't think i've ever actually installed Epson RAW.

EDIT: OK, didn't see you were using Elements! You might really dig Lightroom, Joe--it's a lot more photographery than PS and less graphic-designery.

btw, i have tried to upload the raw upgrade plugin for pse but it keeps telling me that it can't find pse.

can you tell i'm a real computer type guy...?

On your MAC? I shoot mostly in DNG, sometimes in Pentax PEF, and both RAW files automatically open in ACR when I select one from Bridge.

Mac right?

-Hit harddrive
-library
-application support
-adobe
-plug ins
-I have Cs3 here your version of PS i here as well if not cs3 me thinks.
-file formats
-and there it is.

Drop the one there on your desktop/trash and put in the new one. I wouldnt drop the old one in the trash before I have checked that the new one works....

I shoot raw + jpegs. For the jpegs, depending on what I'm shooting (and whether my brain is working), I decide on whether I want the jpegs in black and white or colour. While that may affect how the raw file thumbnail is displayed, that choice doesn't affect the raw file. If I wanted black and white all the time, I would just change the setting in the camera to monochrome. Again that will only affect the jpeg. Then you can skip the conversion step you are going through. For greater control in the conversion, I work on the raw file. Joe, why don't you download the Epson raw converter. You can then convert the raw files to black and white jpegs if you prefer. Remember, though it's not a good idea to edit and resave repeatedly jpegs. You risk a loss in quality at some point.
When I bought my first R-D1, SD cards were really expensive. On my first trip with my camera, to Cuba and El Salvador, I shot jpegs to save space. There are some shots, I wish I had shot in RAW. SD cards are relatively inexpensive now. I think there is no reason not to shoot just RAW or RAW+jpeg.

ok, i got to plug ins and the computer blew up...j/k
could you speak slower for the digitally challenged?
:)

You might try a software update also. I'm not sure how old the PS E6 is but, it may not recognize the Epson Raw if it came out prior to the camera and has not been updated. Mabelsound is right about lightroom it's sweet. Since you have a Mac you might want to do a 30 day free trial of Aperture 2. I use it for quick conversions and web posting. Very capable and easy to use. Also pretty cheap at about $200. Mac even has A2 updated all the way to the Epson RD X raw format.

for a hip guy i'm kinda stuck in the mud here...what i know about ps is what i know, it took forever to learn and now is comfortable.

this raw stuff is pushing my comfort and learning level but i'd like to figure it out.
i did dl the lightroom demo, took one look and headed back to photoshop.

i did try an update and it did try to install raw 6 but failed, saying it could not locate the product or something like that.
