Panasonic just showed their lasted digital camera: Lumix DMC-L1. it's a rangefinder feel digital SLR, equiped with Lecia lenses(14-50, f2.8-3.5, IS lens!), and shared some parts with Olympus's E330:the the four-third system, anti-dust sensor(7mega-pixel, with some modification by Panasonic), and most importanly, it looks like a traditional camera, even a rangefinder.

here are some pictures(from DR):

You change the shutter-speed setting just like with an tradional camera

AP setting is on the lens too.

Question: Why would I want to turn stabilisation off?

From Canon's point of view (because I've got one of their IS lenses) it's twofold:
1) if your shutter speed is fast enough (for me, above 1/50) then there's really no additional requirement for IS and you're merely using battery power (from the camera) to run the IS in a situation in which it isn't really required.

2) if you're mounting the camera on a tripod where the IS is redundant.

Now.. that being said, I know folks who do not follow either of those 2 items. So, you don't HAVE to turn off the stabilisation but it can't hurt either can it? 🙂

Cheers

On some Canon lenses, IS cannot be used while the lense is in a tripod. The result is soft pictures. It bit me a couple of times on my 28-135/IS lense.

Thanks Dave & Paul. I thought about the power bit, but wondered if that was all there was to it. Obviously, there's redundancy factor too. But soft shots when mounted on a tripod? Who wouldda thunk it?
