The Northern Lights were seen all over the world last night. Were you awake then?

Too much light pollution. Developers who descended on my town recently have destroyed our night sky.

I still looked for them every half hour until I got too tired and had to go to bed (12:30). Maybe just the slightest hint of red tint around midnight? Or light pollution -- most likely. Sad because just a couple years ago I could watch meteor showers, comets, aurora, etc. from my back yard.

Anyone else have better luck? Photos?

Dear Board,

I'm glad some people got to see them. The cloud deck over SC Pennsylvania was so dense a nuclear bomb could have detonated 1000 feet overhead and remained invisible. The irony is 15 to 20 miles north of my home the skies had cleared and they were visible from sunset on. I didn't find out about that until I watched the local news at 11:00 PM and by then wasn't up for a drive.

Maybe one day I'll see them but I'm content seeing pictures from friends and fellow board members. A friend is East Central AL got some very nice ones, as did other friends everywhere but the area around Harrisburg, PA.

Tim Murphy

This solar event is still going on, and the current cloudy skies in Northern Michigan are predicted to clear. I'll be out again.

I decided not to stay up that late to observe the Northen Lights because I know that there will be tons of beautiful images posted online about it all. I missed "the experience" maybe.

You are quite right that it is an experience. The Northern Lights are in motion, like a curtain waving in a breeze, subsiding in one place, and coming alive in another. Plus the ever-changing colors. Living in Northern Michigan, I usually see them several times a year. They always surprise and amaze me.

Dear Jim B,

Encouraged by your report that the event is likely to repeat again tonight, I was getting excited. Then I checked the NWS radar map, and to quote Snidely Whiplash from "Rocky and Bullwinkle" fame, it looks like "Curses, foiled again!" ;)
