...is not that it doesn't exist but that it exists for fleeting minutes.
for example...right now, the domke f6, little bit smaller bag, is perfect for my gear...it fits what i normally carry and the way that i like to carry it.
however, i want to change what i carry to make things out there a bit easier and more secure...so my f6 bag is no longer perfect...it is now a source of frustration and leads me to the camera store in search of a domke f2!
or maybe the newer domke fx1--a little bit bigger bag...
bigger would be better because i'd like to carry 4 bodies with lenses attached so i can just reach in, grab a body and start shooting...never to change a lens in the field again!! perfect?
we are a fickle lot, photographers, wanting to improve by changing gear and process and constantly searching out the new and improved...

Not only are we fickle, but we're prickly and persnickety.
And we're convinced that once we find 'the' answer for ourselves, it is also the answer for everyone else; if they don't agree with us, they're clearly stupid.
I point the finger at myself in that sense as well. Something I have to work on.

what?
"Perfection" is a myth, a cruel hoax. The word should simply not exist.
"Good enough for now" is just fine.

I have come to believe there is perfection in a moment. It is never forever and often a fleeting moment in time. Things do come together and appear to be just perfect, then its gone.
Sometimes it is just simple things in life. ..... like the perfect cup of coffee, its not every day but every once in a while it just is.

I inherited my Dad's perfectionist streak, and have struggled with it for a long time. Then I came to the realization one day that it just wasn't going to happen in my lifetime, so I feel better now.
But I still keep trying, just not as intently as before.

I think we are lucky that most things in life are changing all the time. If they weren't, photography would be a quite boring activity

I own a bunch of Billinghams and a bunch of Domkes and a bunch of other camera bags and non-camera bags fitted with padded inserts. None of them is perfect for all occasions, but one of them is always perfect for each occasion.

I think the F6 is as perfect as a bag can get, though not the only bag this can be said for. There are several other Domkes alone that might qualify. Joe, although the F1x is a good bag (and I have one) it is too large and bulky--and very likely too heavy--to carry and shoot out of. I see it as more of a "on location" bag. F2 is a great bag and not too large to carry and shoot out of; though it lacks the front pocket with zipper closure, it does have two front pockets that are good for film and various other stuff. They are a bit less good for those of us with large hands, as they are a bit small to reach into.
You can create more open space in an F6 or F2 by using a two-cell insert instead of the four-cell. If you center it, you have space for a camera with lens on each side.

Yes. Also true of mothers. Psychoanalysts used to blame all problems on the mother. Then Winnicott came along and said that moms don't have to be perfect--just good enough. This is also true of camera bags.

i actually have my f6 set up like that...one insert in the middle with a camera/lens in it & on either side of it...the f2 should allow a similar set up but with 4 cameras/lenses instead of the 2...
although the more i think about it I'm probably gonna stay with 3 or maybe just 2 bodies/lenses and the other 2 lenses tucked in there as well.

God, tell me about it. I am a recovering 'perfect camera bagaholic' by my own admission. I don't think that the word 'perfect' and the words 'camera bag' should appear together in a positive sentence with a greater than random frequency in the English language.

four bodies and lenses? don't that really take you away from what everybody is striving for when switching to mirrorless cameras.Light weight and compactness. As for the F2 and F1x, i've had them and they are huge bags. You'll have them up for sale in no time.

My neighbor to me not to let perfection stand in the way of the good.
And too much gear is a hindrance.

so...i popped 2 bodies with lenses attached and the other 2 lenses into the f6...fits very nicely...but turns out to be way heavier than i want to carry, so forget 4 bodies and lenses in a bigger bag!

Nothing is perfect!
Nothing is perfect!
Forty years ago when I was visiting Japan. I was in a small shop in Kyoto where the owner made and sold clover spring scissors. They were all perfect so it did not take me long to decide on the size. The older gentleman took the the beautiful hand forged piece to the bench. He proceeded to put a random mark using some sort of punch on the blade. Prior to wrapping it, an important part of purchases in Japan, he showed me the blade. In answer to my confused look he said in broken English, "Nothing is perfect!"

But you can call me Steve
So you finally get the bag that carries all your gear the way you want and then find that it's so darned heavy that you can't stand to carry it. Been there too.

what?
Thirty years back, I designed large, steel structures to withstand explosive shock loads.
Customer insisted on a perfectly optimized, absolutely minimal weight structure to take a very precisely specified impact.
I spent almost a year and delivered the "perfect" design just before we ordered the steel.
Two days before the design review, the customer says that he changed the impact load spec.
My perfectly optimized structure became perfectly 100% worthless.
Change the spec (how many cameras do you need to carry) and you change the "perfect" design.

Thank you for this thread....really makes me feel better that i am not alone
My solution for now is carry 3 cameras:
1. Interchangeable camera+prime
2. Large sensor Fixed Compact
3. Small sensor Zoom P&S
All this fits in Domke F3x with room to spare on the side pockets for things like table tripod, etc.
Weight is as much as I want to carry and I do not feel constrained by not having focal length. The prime with interchangeable camera may differ based on the intent for that day.
