I've ever owned. Last year I bought a Leica CM. It's such a great camera I thought I'd buy a little protection for it. So, I got a never-ready case from B-H. Took delivery of it today. You cannot believe the smell of it. My office, my pick-up truck, my uni-bomber cabin, smell to high heaven of deceased bovine pelt. In 50-odd years of owning camera gear I've never encountered such a strong odor. It's not entirely unpleasant but I feel like I'm in the same bunch as some of my office mates who burn pumpkin pie candles. I'm burning dead cow candles.

I've had to preface all of my for sale ads with the warning that I'm a smoker. Now, I'll have to warn that I have Leica leather.

Posted as a diversion.

I had a similar experience with some Wal-Mart work shoes I bought to do yard work. After a week sitting in an open garage window, most of the smell was gone.

Ha! On a similar note, my wife gave me a leather box one year. Beautiful embossed leather with an Egyptian motif. Only problem was, it smelled like the wrong end of a camel...

Sounds like an FSU camera case. I believe they're made of compressed Yak dung. At least that's what the ones I've had smelled like.

I had a nice-looking briefcase from Italy that smelled; when I first opened it, I thought the odor would be gone in a day or two, but it never went away. I finally decided that the thing was actually rotting, and tossed it. Hope your outcome is better.

Gotta second this. Nothing quite beats the aroma of dead Russian cow tanned in Ox piss.

The inside of the Velvet Underground's Peel Slowly and See CD box set which came out a few years ago smells strongly of parmesan cheese. I've never quite worked out why, but I've sniffed two different versions and they both smelled like this :)

When I bought a FED 5, it came with a leather case that was described in Shutterbug [or similar] as "smelling as if it were treated by cow urine".
I don't know; I find it OK. I have never owned a cow though.
