I read this book for a class. I found it to be very enlightening. While I am not into eastern philosophy, this approach to photography was very refreshing and useful to me.

The book is great! Especially like the ideas of balance; ying yang and how it relates to photography: Fast film, slow film; medium format vs 35mm; film vs digital; fast lens vs slow lens, etc.

I've got a copy of it in my library.
It's also worth noting that there is a similarly titled book called 'Tao of Photography' by Tom Ang. I know a few people who've got mixed up over this one.....

Gross' "Tao" is quite good for 'tuning in'. It, and Barnbaum's "Art of Photography" are on my bedstand now.
Barnbaum's is bit deeper and more practical, covering film processing and digital post a bit in the context of art printing.
Both are good for browsing to stay in shape. I don't think you need much else, other than looking at other's pictures.
