so i just noticed there's a slight wobble on my 50 planar...i know others have had issues with a wobble. mine is very slight though and am not sure if it's a defect or normal. thoughts?

thanks.

mine also has the wobble and its very detectable especialy when close focuses and jiggled. No effect on image quality as it would seem. Also I notice mine has a spot of friction where it seems almost as if there is an area on the focus heliocoid that is not lubricated and there is a moment of hesitation or roughness there which seems to be around when the lens is focused to 1.2 meters. I don't dare send it to be repaired because it would probably get stolen in the mail so I'm kind of stuck, also the one year warranty which I never sent in is probably expired by now.

Mine had the same issue. The focus was also quite stiff. I bought it second hand and was informed by the original seller (Popflash) that the warranty wasn't transferable. The person I bought it from wasn't keen on acting as an intermediary between me and Zeiss, so I sent it to David Yau (Leica repairman near Toronto). He sorted it out and had it back to me very quickly. I forget how much he charged, but it wasn't a lot.

... In other news, my Zeiss Ikon that I sent in under warranty for a couple of minor issues just returned to me today. I sent it in nearly three months ago.

I wonder if this has something to do with how folks set down their cameras.

I have both the ZM 50/2 Planar and the 35/2 Biogon and being longer than stubby lenses, like the CV 35/2.5 for instance, I notice that sometimes the camera rests on the bottom corner edge of the lens. As a result, I purposely lay the camera on its back when these lenses are installed. I have no reason to do this, but I do this.

I fear that being canted like that would put pressure on the helical screw used for focusing, perhaps forcing the damping grease away from one side or maybe tend to loosen interior screws used to join the lens together.

I have a ziess 35/2 zm I recently bought from another member the only complaint I have is it has play in the focusing ring.Ive read this is also a common issue with Ziess lens.

What kind of wobble are we talking about? Like a wobble that moves on the axis of the lens itself? (From front of lens to back of lens) or a wobble that moves in relation to focusing? Like a slight "jiggle" motion?

it's a movement in the front element of the lens...the focusing barrel is stationary just that front part has a little play. it's not that big of a deal, i will do something if it does worsen though.

Movement in the front element of the lens? That's quite different from the slight play in the focus ring that (I think) most of us are talking about.
