Well, I did not think so. But, I run into this bird in a pond, and it let me get so close, that I it seemed as I was using my 600mm lens.

Amazing. I have never been able to get so close to a Heron.

That IS amazing. There are lots of herons up here and I can never get within 200 feet of them before the fly off.

Very nice!
Careful though. Herons can be very unpredicatable and agressive at times.
They have powerful puncture potential !
Seriously, a biologist friend has a scar in his arm to prove it!

I believe this is a Great Egret, I have shot them before, but with Canon 7D / 400mm lens.
To compare, this is another Great Egret taken with my Pentax K5 and Tamron 300/2.8:

This is a blue heron I shot with the same Pentax/Tamron combination:

When my Wife and I go birding, there are always digital photographers with 200-400mm zooms who are friendly and help to identify the birds for us
Once a Blue Heron came up the shoreline fifty feet from us. My Minolta 400mm f5.6 APO has gotten a good workout this season. With the Minolta Apo 2x it definately pulls 'em in, but definately requires a tripod. The 400mm I can handhold, which is nice. Since I am normally shooting B&W motion picture film, it is nice that I am now using my Minolta SR-M's. Instead of one peak picture with my SRT101, I can shoot at 3.5FPS and my keeper rate is way up. I like the challenge of getting this on film.
Developed eight rolls of Neopan 400 today, and it's all the birding trips from last year. Got some pretty good stuff there, I can see.
It's still drying right now.
