My gf has her eyes on this lens here but I was wondering if it would work on a Canon 5D with adapter. I understand there were two versions of this lens but not really sure what the difference was and also because I have watched a few of these sell for more then this in the auctions and thought this one does not seem so bad but the fact that it has not sold yet when so many others have sold for more made me hesitant to buy it thinking there might be some problem here I dont know about?

Any advice?

I think all 50/1.7 lenses work on the 5D. There's a AE and a MM-version. Not quite sure the difference. Perhaps you can find out more over at mflenses.com

I tried this lens on a 5D before, but it was 2 years ago so I cant quite sure if it's the same version, there should not be a difference mounting with an adapter though. The 50/1.7 is very sharp, I used to like it a lot.

The lens type shouldn't make a difference in your case. The 'AE' and 'MM' mounts are irrelevant when you have to set the aperture manually. On a later Contax body, the MM lens allows the selection of aperture in-body, and hence shutter-priority mode. You will pay a premium for MM, but you don't need it.

I'm thinking of offloading my Contax/Yashica gear. No idea that the 50mm still went for those prices! I have a 50mm f1.7 MM and a 50mm f1.4 AE if you're interested...

NOW YOU TELL ME! I bought that lens a moment before you posted that message. I always prefer to do business on RFF then epay. Oh well :bang:

DRAT!

Oh well. If you get on with the 50, I'll be selling a 85/1.4 and maybe a 28/2.8 shortly. I'll probably post on RFF first.

That price is not bad - I paid that a couple of years ago for one with original (bulky) hood and cap. It is super on the 5D.
