Sobering observations indeed, although I've voiced my concerns about Olympus and Pentax for quite some time, before the economy cha-cha'd into quicksand. Not fun to watch.

I think professional sales will continue...afterall you gotta spend money to make money.
The amateur / enthusiast markets will shrink as money gets tight and other things become priority. Thom's point about Nikon concentrating on the higher end of the market (mid - to top class of the product line) would bear out in such a scenario.

Pentax has been going out of business for 20 years now. 
I really do hope that Pentax and Olympus will stick around for some time. Both currently produce--and have for many decades--great cameras that are clearly designed for real enthusiasts.
