I just saw a few pictures of a thumb grip kind of thing on a few different Leica M9 digital cameras and was wondering if anyone knows what it is called and where I could purchase one?

Thanks for any and all info.

It's called a Thumbs Up. You can get them from pop flash, among other places.

Like the designer placement of a sticky plaster sandpaper does the same trick, makes a camera 'hard core'........
(edit since original image removed, we are talking about that very beat up M9 that everybody knows)

Why would you pose a question in a forum which is easily answered via Google?

Just wondering at the mentality.

Why not. We can all help each other and if someone doesn't want to help, they don't need to post.
I use the Thumbs up and it works great, both for grip and decreasing camera movement.

The thumbs-up is almost essential imho for M8/M9. While it is quite a pricey piece of brass, it improves the camera handling by a degree that you wouldn't expect from such a minimal addition...

I much prefer the Thumbie by Steve Barnett.

Another vote for the thumbie. Gives the same grip but smaller, leaves the hot shoe open and doesn't poke me as much when I carry the camera over my shoulder.

Thanks for information on the Thumbie. I assume this is the one that is attached with double sided tape. How long have you had this attached, and does it seem to stick?

Never heard of the Thumbie - I'll have to google it... - but the Thumbs Up makes the M9 useable. I've not tried the Leica M-Grip, but that's even more expensive.

Yes, I'm curious about this as well. That's a lot of weight/pressure on the contact point - does the tape hold up with heavy use? Can it "pop off" unexpectedly? And will the tape eventually become a gummy mess?

Didn't much care for the Leica M grip ergonomics but I've found that it and the Thumbs Up work together very nicely.
From an ergonomic standpoint, the PHOTO EQUIP grip by itself is a better choice then the Leica grip IMHO but it is bulky and has nasty white lettering on the back.
Since I switched to the Leica grip and the Thumbs Up w/o the lettering (and put a black dot on my M9), I'm very happy with how the camera looks and handles.

I used to have a thumbs up EP-1, but I needed to have a cold shoe for a external viewfinder, so got rid of that one.
I bought the CSEP-1 with the intention of using the cold shoe... but I found it to be too bulky with the raised cold shoe... I just hated the look of the extra 4 mm on top! Going to sell the CSEP-1.
Now onto the Thumbie... provides thumb rest and leaves the hot shoe open, best of both worlds! Now I have reservations on using the double sided tape, but I think it just might work for me.

I couldn't find anything on the Thumbie either. I use a Thumbs-Up on my M8 and it's great for holding the camera more securely. I have the one with the accessory shoe on top so I can still use a clip-on viewfinder.
I tried Leica's M hand grip and don't like it. Jim
