I would like a cable release that is mechanical or electrical where you can set it to (for example) 8 seconds and push a button and it'll trip the shutter and hold it down for 8 seconds ... so that way you don't have to manual do the time in bulb mode....
Does anybody know if something like this exists... I took a look at some autoknips and those look like they are just self timers..

That may be a hard find..
Typically, the plunger is activated and pushes down, but, I think it stays in the down possession.
You need on that also raises up off the shutter button.
Seems like a similar system to the standard mechanics may work, It just works opposite. it puts the plunger down at the beginning of the cycle and raises it at the end. A kind of clockwork gearing I'd guess.
Maybe some one can modify a standard one to do this ?
Interesting Idea I guess.

Hundreds of people must have thought of such a device, and maybe some were indeed made: but I have not heard of any that was made commercially. The probable reason is that a watch with a second hand and a locking cable release together form an adequate substitute.

Who knew? Besides dainaka that is.
It never ceases to amaze me what one can learn on RFF.
Thanks dainaka!

As Dainaka says, Prontor. I have one. If anyone can tell me how to strip it and clean it to make it more accurate, I'd be grateful.
Cheers,
R.
