What do you think about TLR cameras? I love rangefinders but have always thought TLRs were great in their own way: when I look at the focusing screen of a TLR I feel like I can separate myself from the scene more and focus on composition. It's all very zen ;)

The EP1 looks like a great new camera and although I too was a bit peeved at the lack of an EVF, I guess you've got to try and look on the bright side! :)

I agreed, I use Hassy and Mamiya TLR as the same time as E-P1. To be honest I prefer the camera with EVF, but it makes no different that it doesnt.
The weak point of the E-P1 is the "zoom" focus issue. I wish the new firmware update will allows the zoom function to be allocate to a another button ie the +/- button instead of "info" button. Beside this point, the camera is fantastic in its own right when using manual lens.

The nice thing about a screen is that you are seeing
in 2 dimensions. It is very easy to compose/ arrange
your subject on a screen. I find the Oly very
good at this because you can see the screen to about
170 degrees of a angle. You can even see the
AF box to.
With the AF set to the Ael/Af button, the camera responds quickly.
I'm luvin this camera....I feel free again....

Yeah man...I love being a tourist...I am a tourist thru life....

I fit right in with the crowd...it's the only time I ever fit in anything...but as a tourist...I get to work freely and no one pays any attention to me even in my own home town...in fact....

If you get into a somewhat sticky situation...then just look at the camera like an amature and talk to the camera....

at that point even WWE Wrestlers will leave you alone....

It's all about how you look. You're not a real photographer if your using the lcd screen of a point and shoot to compose - you could never take good photos like that.

This is an issue that really divides people. I would not buy one for this reason even though the camera is very nicely built. In particular one of the attractions is that in theory the camera can mount Leica M glass with adapters. But I cannot conceive of how I could focus the bloody thing while using two hands to hold the camera at arms length. (I am yet to grow a third arm.) For me its out.

This issue for me is that the E-P1 would essentially force me to compose via that screen, and for that much money, that's a no-no in my book. If others can deal with it, more power to 'em, but I'm more than content to wait it out; I'm on no firm timetable for this at all.

i don't like lcds because i lose touch with what's going on around me. chalk it up to the combination of several factors. it's the complete opposite of what i like about rangefinders. it would make a nice tripod camera, though.

I like being a tourist, people just smile or ignore me when they think I'm just a tourist. Sometimes I use the LCD on the E-620 even though it has a perfectly good optical VF just because I can :)

Other times, I'd be run over by mountain bikers if I try to get this photo without using the LCD:

Bi- or varifocal lenses in one's glasses are not congenial to walk with. The bottom of the field of eye view is sharp only for handheld newspapers, camera LCD screens and the like. But try to maneuver through a patch of forest, bog or the like without clearly seeing the snakes and stump holes in front or under your feet, anyone try?

So LCD only viewer cameras are only for the 20/20 vision young. Or for those that never stray from paved and carpeted places.

Even steps are hard to get up/down with bifocals, except very quickly and painfully, of course ...

What is the deal with the lazy, condescending gits around here generalizing about "the young" and complaining about their problems? Get over yourself. I've been nearly blind in one eye and 20/100 or worse with severe astigmatism in the other for my entire life. I didn't wear glasses until I was a teenager and somehow managed to hike for days at a time in the wilderness (and take some pictures along the way) without stepping in holes or getting bit by animals.

I prefer an LCD 95% of the time.

Edit to add: my father and uncle wear bifocals, both are about 60. They both somehow manage to hike all over the big north woods without any problem, spending weeks at a time with no contact to civilization.

Thank you, climbing_vine. I needed that.

Case in point: I tried to run around bifocaled and all the things I wrote about above did happen to me. You must be very lucky and resourceful, more so than that lazy condescending git I am. Sorry.

John,
I learned that in the very early 70's from a mentor friend on the street in NY.
If you look at any of the good Streetshooter's, it's obvious that they were all tourist thru life.....BAR NONE!

We are all tourist anyway, non one has a permanent Visa....
so except the fact and live in the "here and now" because that's where your next image lies....
waiting for discovery.....
