Dear Friends,
After a glance on this book, which is going to help us in our Kiev Project, my mind is somewhat blown up with some erratic thoughts which I will throw here mostly on behalf of those of us who have never disassembled a Kiev.
My first glance at the book, reminded me those past times some twenty years ago, when I became serious with Photography and started to buy books about, mostly basic technical ones, about what is a camera, film, etc.
To this cathegory Tooke's book belongs, and upon his own statement he started learning the Contax from scratch, in a world in which info about these cameras was practically unavailable.
How much our world has changed since those times ! How easy it is today ! The internet has changed it all. So if we make a list of advantages the newcomer, or beginner has behind him towards our Kiev Project, I would like to mention many of them.
First, since those "dark" times we do have the Kiev Survival Site with depth info and pictures.
Then we have the extreme ease of comunication, and effective communication, via posting both words and enlarged pictures.
We have this forum gathering us together, bringing many minds and opinions. Questions will be able to be posted instantaneously and given instantaneous answers. Team thinking.
And we have eBay, providing us with access for parts, mainly from Alex photo goods, serving us for a wonderfull parts back up arsenal.
Now if I compare my proposed Outline for the Project, I cannot but see that by comparizon it looks very comprehensive, although we will go in less depth about the technical issues, yet having the KSS as an open option for the one in need of more info.
Finnally I will be adding something of my own. I will do my best for us to develope our most powerful instrument, our own judgement, our feeling and intuition, and our common sense. Those of us that have built our own darkrooms, know exactly what I am speaking about. It is not Vudu, as results will be conrasted against facts visible to our eyes, but I guess many of us will be surprised by how good and useful our brains are, instead of relying on sacred 'authoritative' dogmas. If I achieve to ignite you here, I will be done.
The Kievs and Contaxes, perhaps more than any other cameras, are a sort of quasi-living organisms. Remember they have been mannually assembled. Some weeks ago i had a problem with a stiff to rotate J-12. I cleaned and lubricated but once inside the camera this J-12 seemed to have not improved much. Yet after several weeks of using and banging daily, it became really smooth. What happened ? Being everything inside the cameras and lenses quite overwhelmed by a lot of gears, there is the time factor needed for each part to "find" again its place in harmony.
These quasi-live organisms need to be used in order to stay in bussiness. Using them, in its turn, will bring from time to time to some eventual dis-balance. The Kiev Project in its technical side will take care to provide you with the necessary instruments to restore harmony back.
Cheers,
Ruben.
