I want a 50. I can see why everyone has so many of them. There is no one solution. Argh! I want the ZM, the asph lux, the DR, the collapsible, and now I'm wanting the sonnar on a IIa, ugh!

:bang: :bang: :bang:

Nikon f2, Jupiter 3, Canon F1.5, Elmar f3.5 uncoated, Summitar, Elmar f2.8, Summarit, Jupiter 8, Sonnar f1.5 coated and uncoated..... 🙂

Jupiter 8 is very good and very inexpensive. Maybe you can get your fix without shocking your wallet at the same time.

Jupiter-8 seems like a great little lens, and cheap as chips!

I can't complain about 50mm. It's fine, you photograph what you see. I guess its why its so popular.

To hijack a little, would a collapsible 50mm work on a zorki 4k ?? (I want a lens that will let my cam fit in my pocket easier, but i'd be afraid the lens would rub against the shutter)

also, are most of the various lenses really playing on personal preference over performance?

Sure will!! I had on I-50 mine for a while when I had a Zorki 4. It collapsed with out any problems.

50-ties have been my main lens for quite a while now. I seldomly use my 35 and as for my 28 and 90 ... never.
I have the latest cron, which is good at everything, but perfect in none.... good for family type shots and I guess slides.
The 1955 50mm summicron collapsible is possibly the best lens I have for I love to shoot with Tri-x or Agfa apx 100 this lens gives the perfect noir look.
For sharpness nothing beats a dual focus....
For slides I guess the latest version are always thze best.
A real cuty, and great result overall be it B&W, slide or colour negative is the latest 2.8 Elmar.

I have the luxury of owning 4 M cameras, the MP, M6ttl and 2 M4's so I can distribute hte film with the appropriate lenses, all according to personal taste. Most used is the MP with pre-current 50 cron or the Lux, and the M4 with the collapsible cron, which by the way is in perfect condition.

I allways have the M6 with the elmar with me, but coming down to the amount of shots it is not as heavily used as the afore mentioned combinations.

I find the 50 to provide the most natural result, step back or take two steps forward to simulate the 35 or 75, 28 or wider is to wide, distorts even if only minimally and I've never been a fan of telelenses.. As mentioned before you must adapt to the 50, once having done so you will rarely need anything else...

I just bought the 50 Zeiss, just to try out and it is very much like a late cron, I at least cannot see any difference between them, but for the price of a second hand cron I would alwaxs stick to leica, it just feels good... and having a leica camera or cameras you will always want one in the end.

50mm is ok for me, as useful as others in the "moderate" focal length range, but seems on the long side now. The Contax IIIa came to me with a J8, and this camera really deserves a 1.5/50mm Sonnar. Maybe someone here has a nice post-war lens for it? 🙂

50 can be a learned lens to use.
after using the 35 the 50 seems like a short tele.

i've learned to like it.

But, Joe the 50 is whatever you want it to be. Short tele, long wideangle, it's your call. Thanks to the competition (and the fact I'd already decided to, largely due to a discussion with Honus) I've really only shot 50 since the turn of the year. Do you know what? I'm loving every minute. It feels like coming home, just like all the time I had nothing but a 50ish and had to work with it. I love my 35 and 90 for travel but for just strolling about with a camera, it's the 50 every time. Oh, and (older) Elmars rule 🙂

the 35 is more to my liking, much like the 50 is to you.
the lens for all seasons so to speak.

if i could had to choose but 1 lens forever it would be a 35.

but i do like the 50 and would like to get better at using it.

Some of my best photos have come from the contax g's 45mm, and that's my least-used lens. I'd like something now for my M2 and ZI, but I'm lost in all these 50's, haha. I've never had a lens below F2, either, would be neat to try out some really wide open apertures.

Which ones have the closest focusing distance?

The competition made me use my 50's all the time. Soon after I realised that this is my preferred focal length. I am imposing on myself a sort of ban on the 50's for now, to try and learn the 35's. My first impression is that it needs a more aggresive style, esp. if you take photos of people. If I had to choose just one lens (God forbid) it would be a 50.

The darn focal length just sticks to me. I mean, I've tried but can't even manage to sell a single one of mine. The 50s and me, well, we gravitate/ally. It's hopeless.

I was never much of a fan of 50s... until I got my 50/2 ZM and used it on the ZI. I dunno why, but that became my everyday walk around combo and I really learned to appreciate the 50mm focal length.
