Just how loud is the mirror slap in these cameras?
I read that the Exactas are quieter. Your experiences?
Thanks,
L

I'm not that sure which 'Topcons' you are referring. I have a Topcon Unirex which has a loud cocking cycle, a very quiet shutter release, and a curtain that opens and closes while the mirror and shutter do their work. The slap is not great but the curtain noise is there, without jarring movement.
The Unirex is a very good camera, with some features that other SLRs don't have. My favorite is the flash synch to 1/500 as shutter is a leaf shutter.
This is in bright sun using a ring flash for fill, using the Unirex in a situation that would not be possible with other SLRs.

My only experience with a Topcon was a Super DM a wedding photographer friend once owned. It was only a little bit louder than an Olympus OM-1. But the Super DM had a cloth shutter. Not loud at all for an SLR of the period. I'm not sure about other Topcons.

My RE-super is fairly quiet as is my RE-2 (this one sounds "hollow"). The Exakta is quieter, of course, since there is no down-slap of the mirror. They only had quick-return mirrors from the VX1000 onwards.

I have a Topcon RE Super. It is just a little bit louder than my Nikon F2, but the shutter sound is "smoother" that the Nikon.
