Hi Folks,

Does anyone know if the rumour about Tri-X being discontinued is true?

I would be so sad to see it go - been shooting Tri-X for years.

Best wishes
Stuart

Spend less time worrying about bull**** rumours on the web and more time shooting it if you like it so much. I personally think your post is very inflammatory and altogether unhelpful to anyone with an interest in imaging with film. Speculation and rumour-mongering does not really help anybody in any way.

1)A few years ago Anton Corbijn bought 3 freezers full with Tri-X (2500 rolls!)because of such a rumour and Tri-X still isn't discontinued!
2)@ plantinum: Orwo N74 is available in 100 & 400 ft rolls for about half the price of Tri-X andd has great reviews (and according to the reviewers has a Tri-X look...)

I will check out this Orwo N74; where can you get it?

I've been a TX shooter for a very long time and had become so used to that way of seeing that I had more or less calibrated myself to the film. Oddly, shooting quite a lot of the Kentmere 100 has gotten me to finally see in other ways. A great inexpensive film with Ilford quality control, but it is not 400, and the 400 version is sure not TX. I still like Tri-X and look forward to shooting the several years worth I have in the freezer. I have also been working through a 100 feet of HP5 and find it a perfectly adequate substitute, though not better to my eyes in any way.

I would be sad to see TX go, but like others, find these random rumors kind of irresponsible. At least give some reason for this. For me too the price has made the issue pretty irrelevant.

I’m very disappointed with HP5+ in 4X5. I’ve given it a fair shot, processing it in several different developers, but for me, TX 320 is much better.

Jim B.

Very different films; I can certainly see preferring one over the other. HP5 and Tri-X are very similar to each other in 35mm.

Why would Kodak discontinue the world's best selling film in any format or speed? Doesn't make any sense. Trix goes only when Kodak goes.

ORWO UN-54 (their ISO 100 film) has a Plus-X look, makes sense the 400 would look like Tri-X.

Here!

They also sell it spooled up into cassettes for a smaller investment. George at ORWO NA is a pleasure to deal with.

I'm breaking down my latest 400 foot roll after lunch, as the dark times have come to the north country.

Pretty much switched over to Double XX for all my 35mm B&W needs. And as I'm only shooting three or four rolls of B&W 120 each year, I guess this news wouldn't really affect me so much.

Now if Kodak discontinues Double XX, I'm screwed.
