and wow - that VF blackout is unbearable! If they are going to add Video to the camera - will they be able to eliminate that?

I have an FZ50 with an EVF and find under very bright conditions the EVF tends to get washed out. Is this what happened to you?

Bob

Why would adding video to a camera make the viewfinder blackout disappear? Its a shutter....think about it, the shutter closes to take a picture the same way cameras have done for a very long time, even the point and shoots. Plus video even at the G1's resolution of 12 megapixles would be between 25 and 30 frames per second! If Panasonic managed to pull that off cheap RED would be pissed.

In short...aint going to happen.

If you have used the G1 you must know what I mean - it is not the slight black out of the shutter crossing the sensor. I am talking about the total blackout of the finder for a significant amount of time - probably close to half a second (maybe less, but it seems that long) even with a 1/4000 shutter speed. So, no it is not the shutter dictating this behavior.

And I think it is official that HD video will be offered in a subsequent G1 release - so the question makes perfect sense. They obviously aren't going to capture video in the same manner,

Could you be more specific?

/T

See above - put your camera on manual - 1/4000sec and no review. The VF goes blank for about 1/2 second. Now if I have an incorrect setting, please correct me, but I have not found a way around it.

If makes panning practically useless. I thought anyone using the camera would have noticed this - I should have been more specific.

Thanks

In burst mode, most EVF equipped cameras lock the frame after the first shot. Apparently the G1 is no different than other EVF equipped cameras in that regard. Is that what you are seeing?

As someone who has done a lot of work with the G1 and as someone well versed in digital video I will tell you 1) dont assume I have not used the camera, and no the camera does not blank out for half a second, if it did I would hate it. The black out is instant and no slower then my 20D or 5D or SLR I have used. 2) HD video is not going to be 12 megapixles video frames and as well that kind of bandwidth is years away from trickling down to consumer cameras. Video cameras that can capture that kind of video with that kind of bandwidth make Medium Format digital back's prices seem cheap, todays consumer storage media is no where near fast enough to even pipe that kind of signal.

So in conclusion, if you dont like the G1's blackout which based on experience is not more then any other camera out there... the M8 is only a few thousand dollars more and you get no blackout.

I didn't assume you hadn't used a G1, I believe you.

And please don't imply I made any reference to 12MP video frames - you are taking the my video reference out totally out of context. Video capabilities of the new version mean nothing to me.

But, you are absolutely wrong about the G1 blackout being on par with a SLR. It is significantly longer than the 20D's - I have both here at my desk so arguing with the facts is futile! :).

Now, again let me say, if I have missed a setting that will reduce this blackout time- I am happy to read about it.

Besides, it's a $800 consumer grade camera. I think expectations for such a camera have gotten a little out of hand.

More like $500!

I agree that expectations are overblown for a consumer level camera. I just hear so much praise for it that I am surprised that people are willing to overlook significant shortcomings. My intent is to pose my questions to the community - I could be doing something wrong.

there has to be something funny with your camera then because I got a 20D and a 5D and about 6 other SLR's and there is not difference in my test model G1 and the others I have used

Ah yes, sample variation! :bang: No, there is nothing funny about my G1! Maybe I got an exceptionally fast 5D, 1D, 20D, 1Ds...?

Are you comparing side by side? Or recalling from memory - if the later, you will find things different if you compare side by side. If the former, then please share the setting that you have found that reduces the blackout.

I cannot believe someone could compare the two and not notice the G1 lag - it is a fact. Check out getdpi and many other sites and you will see I am not the only one who finds it bothersome...
