I've tried to enable the menu so that the LCD screen goes off with a touch of one of the Function buttons, but no go. It just won't "take." It clearly says LCD on/off in the menu, but it just doesn't work.
Any suggestions?
I am using an EV-3 if that complicates things.
Strangely, no problems turning off the LCD on the EPL-1.

I just got one of those, a E-PL1 how does one turn that screen off and how does the picture quality compare between the two?

On the EPL-1
Menu > Tools (looks like gears) > "B" Button > fourth one down looks like a bullseye target and says Function > turn menu to "Backlit LCD".
The LCD screen will now go on and off with a touch of the red "movie" button on the back of the camera.
As for quality, I believe the EPL-1 and EP-2 have the same sensor.
I have really been impressed with the EPL-1 especially with the Panasonic 14mm f2.5 pancake.

Larry, for the E-P2 you can set designate one of the buttons to turn theLCD screen on and off. Menu > Tools (the two gears) > B (BUTTON/DIAL > (choose) BACKLIT LCD from Menu. I have the E-P1 and I am assuming the E-P2 is the same.

Traveler, yes, I got it to work with the EV-3 taken off the camera, however when I put the EV-3 back on the hot shoe, the "function" to turn off the screen no longer works.
Must be programmed to not turn off the LCD if the electronic viewfinder is in place?

The first "weaker" AA filter....
The first "weaker" AA filter....
The E-PL1 was reviewed and found to have the sharpest OOC jpegs of many of it's counterparts from other mfrs. It was even rated as sharper than the Panasonic GF-1 which came out the same time. Same sensor, different process engine, and the E-PL1 had the weaker AA filter = sharper images straight out of the camera.
In case you are not aware, it is strong AA filters that soften most jpg images from digital cameras, hence the need to sharpen in PP.
I have not gotten a clear answer on whether the E-PL2 and 3 also used the weaker filter.
Now that the new 16mp sensor is in the E-PL5, I plan to get one and surely hope the weaker AA filter is installed. I've been using the E-PL1 since it hit the street... have 2, and it's been proven to me in my own experience that the images from that lite PEN are sharper straight from the camera than any other camera I have owned, including FF... Canons, Nikons, etc.
In my desire to remove Post Processing from my work load to final high quality images, I am banking on the E-PL5 to get me the pixels for large prints and the sharpness revealed by the use of the weaker AA filter. I have never had a case of "moire patterns" which is a primary reason for Anti-Aliasing filters in the first place.
While I've tried other SLR's and DSLR's over the years, I have had Olympus camera's in my bag continuously since the early 70's.
Oly... Most Innovative, lightest, and best consistency in top glass in the market.
I currently use the E-PL1, with the newer II R version of the micro 14-42 zoom. Fastest lock on focus I have encountered and smaller/lighter than the preceding micro 14-42 zoom.
Investment... I bought this second one used, did some lens selling/swapping and have $260 in the camera, including the smaller, faster focus II R lens. Don't see enough advancement in the PL2/PL3 bodies to move up from the E-PL1.
However, the E-PL5 with the new sensor... that's a no brainer.
I lusted after the OM-D Em-5, but that camera is above budget for me. Besides I knew that new 16Mp sensor would come out in a PEN, and it's out in the E-PL5, in less than a year, at $549, body only from Olympus.

Yes there must be an over-ride since the LCD function is tied to the EVF on/off button. I have the E-P1 so I can't say for sure. Say, that's a great shot of Obama campaigning. Where was that?

First, that's a great shot of Obama, that lens is sharp as a tack corner to corner can't
wait untill I get mine in the mail, also did you use a larger flash with the camera??
Second, I've been using my E-PL1 for a few weeks and I'm still amazed at the sharpness
and color, I did sell the lens that came with the camera the 14-42 zoom first version
it just was noisy and to much front lens wobble the later version the 14-42 II MSC is
much better in build and image quality.
I did see the E-PL5 and it's great camera and at 16 megapixels it really nice.

Same settings as you, on the EPL-1 I am using noise reduction on "auto" and noise filter on "low," but I think this would only be enabled on jpegs, and I always shoot raw.

I wish Olympus would release the rumored 25mm f1.8, would be a great addition to Pano's 14mm.

25/1.8 has been rumored to be built and priced along the lines of the 12mm Olympus lens. $800 is far too expensive for a m43 lens in my opinion. Of course they may decide to make it competitive with the Panasonic 20/1.7--around $300-$400.

Wow, that seems like a really high price considering that here in the U.S. the Pan-Leica 25mm f1.4 is down to $499 at some stores.

Now I am reading that the new 17/1.8 will retail for around $700 and should be available in stores (USA) in a month's time. It will be a more elegant lens than the Panasonic/Leica 25/1.4 and more compact, though not a pancake.

They are expensive, but they are beautifully made, all metal and push-pull manual
focusing, but I'm totally enjoying the 14f2.5 and I see a increase in price to $349.99
it makes my deal only at $159.99 off the bay even sweeter.
