All,

Hey, I've been pondering lenses (again) for my Leica M9. I primarily shoot street photography, along with some family now and then.

Which of the following two lens combinations would you choose--and why?

Note that I currently own the first combo, but rarely use the 90mm ... so I'm pondering the second combo of just two lenses.

Thanks ...

R

The modern Leica glass has the same look.

I shoot 28 Cron ASPH and 50 Lux ASPH on my Monochrome for a wider spread.

I always think 35 and 50 are too close, 35 for a one lens setup my three lens set up all crons 28 50 90 but I hardly use the 90.

Hello Chris
get out of the Comfort zone ....you can be Wonderfully surprised

I would try the 50 / 90 or 35 / 90 approach
or the 50 with a 28 or 21
:D

I took 35/50/90 on my recent trip to the UK and it worked well. Most of my shooting was with the 50. The 90 was invaluable on a couple of occasions.

Lately, I'm carrying a 28/50 kit. 28 has never been my favorite, but I'm getting comfortable with it.

While I have 90 and 135 lenses for the Ms, I use them relatively infrequently and prefer shorter focal lengths. However, when I pick up an SLR, I usually want 90, 135, or 180mm. The reflex viewfinder setup naturally suits a longer lens, to my eye.

(When I'm carrying the GXR-M with its APS-C format, my standard kit is 21/40/90 ... equivalent to 30, 60, 135 on the M9 ... and that seems almost perfect for its TTL viewing and size/weight.)

I voted for the three lens combo for max versatility, but if I was going to do a two-lens kit, it'd be a 35mm & 75mm. I've really come to appreciate that combo.

I find a 28, 50, and 90 kit to be very useful (it's what I have on my X-Pro1), but on my Leica I have 21, 35, 50, and I'm very pleased. I sometimes wish for a 90, but it would see very little use.

My core kit is 35/50/90 but I'll often just take 35/90. I also use a 21 and a 135 on occasion.

I've considered slimming down to a 35/75 kit but, in the final decision, I'd couldn't part with my 90 Elmarit M... or my 50 Summicron.

Thanks for the input. Helen is right--as always. Maybe my idea of 35/50 is more than a bit conventional and uninspiring! I'll hold put for now--and see what it's like to shoot 35/90. As some have pointed out, 28/50 is a fine kit, too, but I struggle with a 28mm lens ... unless I'm in a congested big city. Anyway, thanks for your comments ...

Tom, my lineup includes the 28, 35, 50, 75, 90 and 135 and I wouldn't get rid of any of them. I'm just suggesting that if I was going to travel light I'd just carry the 35 and 75. I use all of them as appropriate though.

My total kit is much larger ... 21, 28, 35, 40, 50, 90, 135 for M-mount. Some are duplicated. But that's because I have four bodies and two formats to cover. I rarely if ever carry more than three lenses at a time. Too many decisions. ;-)

The lenses I take with me depends more on the bag or lack thereof. The 35/90 is sans bag... well a belt pouch for the 90. The 35/50/90 rides in a Domkie F5XB quite comfortably. The 21, 35, 50, 90, 135 go in a Billingham with flash and computer. The 21, 35, 90 go in a Pellican 1200. All go with my M9 and when I'm feeling old-school, it's just a 50 cron on the M9 with a spare battery and card in my pocket.

If I add a second body... like a MM... I'd probably want a 28 to pair with the 50 that would be my body cap. Strange that B&W calls for a different focal vision, but it does.

For a 3-lens outfit, I will use 24-35-75. I will usually use an aux finder with the 24; although it's easy enough to estimate the coverage just using the 28mm frameline in the finder.

I prefer to carry just two lenses, using one of these most of the time (either 35 or 50). So for me it would be 35 + 90, or 24 + 50. I could conceivably use a 35 and a 50 together on a long term trip. In this case I would just use one lens on a particular day, according to the location and my mood, and leave the other lens in the hotel. However, if it was for travel, I wouldn't be using a Summilux. I have a preference for small lenses in travel situalions especially. Having said all that, I guess none of this has much to do with your useage and experience. Good luck with your choice!

I chose neither as I'd rather go 35mm Summilux, 75mm APO Summicron.

I had the 90mm pre-ASPH Cron before and while I love its Mandler rendition it was just too heavy to lug around on travels. I then came across a bargain 75mm Summarit, which was nice. Compact and stunningly sharp, quite a different look from the old 90 Cron. I decided I could live with the 75mm FOV instead of the 90mm. Now I have the APO, which was again a chance bargain that I stumbled across.
