I picked up this IIIc today and noticed that Germany is spelled Gern. I have verified the serial number with the crate number..
Has anybody come across one of these oddities??

Well it seems that someone tried to put the word 'Germany' under the original Leitz stamp, but once trying to engrave the M, a little too late discovered that it wasn't such a good idea at all...
My IIIc has a 40xxxx number and has Germany stamped in very tiny lettering.

I have a couple of other IIIc's with Germany engraved in that location and as best as I can tell the font on this one matches my other cameras so I really don't think it's someones attempt to fake it..

The "Gern" is in lettering different from the rest. Besides, it is not centred.

The font and size match the same "Germany" on my other IIIc's and IIIf
As for centering it would be if it was completely spelled out..
It looks to me as though the engraver did not finish the job.

The best camera is one that still works!
A little too much Schnaps the night before ... a spelling mistake ... "oh sh*t ... oh well I'll just put it in the system and hope nobody notices!"

Watch that step!
In 1946 they had a few bad days at Wetzlar......like the day they installed all the instruction plates in upside down for example
