Since you don't shoot wide open very often, I'd suggest a 50mm f/2.8 Elmar-M instead. It's less prone to veiling flare, which I find ruined many of my pictures.
thanks, fellow Boyscout 😉

I was considering a new summarit-m 50mm f/2.5 first, but a second hand 'cron would be a stop faster... and on par with the Nikkor at f/2 since new Leica glass would be reputated for shooting wide open.

Generally used crons go for +600 euro. A "buy it now" at 560 plus warranty seems a bit strange then.

Remember that Summicrons went back to 1952, and have fone through many changes in the optical formula. So some of this depends on "the Look" that you want. The older lenses give the "classic" lower-contrast/high resolution images of the Leitz glass of the 50s. The collapsible Summicron is my favorite, and a really good one will run under $400.

I've got several collapsibles, the Type I rigid, and Type 2 rigid. For some truly boring samples see here:

I've got the collapsible Summicron already, got it along with my M2. It's soft at f/2 and very prone to flare, I'd now like a lens that's fairly good at f/2 with high contrast (and resolution).

I would check the collapsible for light haze, coating damage, or problems with the balsam. I've got five of them, and four give very good results. The fifth one is made from the "left-over" parts, and has a front element that I polished and re-coated myself. It's soft.

The later Summicrons are higher-contrast, and have more "sharpness" to the image.

slight haze here, only a few small scratches on the rear element (probably my fault). lens was always used with UV filter on the body, and probably never taken off the camera. Youxin can CLA it for $20, if I decide him to send my M2 for CLA. Don't know if I dare sending him my M2, after some bad rumours.

Auction for that 'cron ending soon, don't know yet if I should get that one. It's a bit more expensive than most other auctions, but 12 months of warranty would be great.

PS: Brian, would you mind checking this post? Thanks!

Were you using the 50/1.2 on a rangefinder? I don't get it. I know you didn't ask for this, but maybe a slower Nikkor on whatever SLR body you were using could be an option.

Also sup /p/

Get a Hexanon 50/2 and dont look back - superb lens , easily as good as Summicron and can be found cheaper! Here is an example from mine:

The price of the eBay 'cron you're looking at is about what I paid for my minty current version. Optically they're the same, but obviously the current one is a little newer and the built-in hood means no futsing around with a clip-on job (but then mine lacks the focusing tab which you may prefer). If it's worth €530+ to you then go for it.

BTW I love my 'cron. It has great contrast and corner-to-corner sharpness even wide open.

50 1.2 is a Nikon F Ai, for SLR. worn and a damaged rear element (only visible, but useless, under flarys tage photography)

lovely, thanks. This one has been checked and has 12 months of warranty, so that's quite a fair price. I bought it just a second ago

I'm with Krosya here ... my immaculate Hexanon 50mm f2 cost me around $450.00 and it's a great lens. It's sharp, amazingly resistant to flare and has a pullout hood. I have a 50mm Summicron which sits in the cupboard since I got the Hex which appears to me to have a better build quality and a much smoother focusing action! Matsuiyastore quite often has one in stock (where I got mine) and they pop regularly in the classifieds here.

[edit] ... but I just noticed you bought a Summicron ... oh well we tried! 😛

Checked the Post- yup! I've had that happen before!

On the Summicron- Light haze will do it.

On Youxin, I just got back Two IIIf's, a IIIa, Black III, and an M2. All perfect, turned around door-to-door in 10 days.

I picked it up in Germany. Exploring the "feel" of a totally new kind of lens and shooting style, first results are promising. last photo without any editing at all!
