does anyone have any experience of these cheaper range of scanners? i need to get quite a number of negs on to my computor,and cant afford a more expensive one.will they stand up to a little hard work? and is the resolution passable?

In general, with scanners, the price is often a reflection of its performance. It might be fine, but you should keep your expectations in check.
Look, if you have a lot of negatives to scan, just spend the money and get a quality machine.
When you try to "cheap out," you often end up spending more. First, you buy something cheap. It doesn't really work as expected. So you keep it or sell it at a loss. Then you buy the next model or another scanner. Either it works or you have the same result. And so it continues until you finally buy a quality piece of gear.
This is true of most things in life.
