I was wondering about this one day when I noticed my wife's favorite search engine is Google. I, instead, Yahoo! :) A while ago, a friend of mine swore that Magellan was the best.

Why?

Which one sold out first (you know, placing useless links first if you pay the right amount)? Which one's less commercial? Why do you prefer one over another?

I work in the field of online advertising and I can tell you that when you search on Yahoo!, what you think is free search is in fact paid for a big part.
In Google, it is free search, except the "sponsored links" on top and right hand side of the page (it's called paid inclusion...Google it!)
I use Google because they have the most referenced pages of all the search engines.

I just googled Yahoo and yahooed Google. The results were similar, though I do prefer Google.

Now, honestly...wouldn't this be one of those threads better suited for 'and now for something completely different' so it's not displayed on the front page..? :)

Maybe later, for now we should have fun.

I use Godzilla/Firefox and set the internet button to come up Google, which I feel is clearly superior to Yahoo. And I also like Firefox as it pretty much eliminates popups.

I only use yahoo to access a few yahoo groups. Of course becoming a member of a yahoo group automatically (I think) gets you a yahoo mail account, which results in your "bulk" box being full of weird stuff. Never open, always delete.

Oh, I never assumed Yahoo's searches were free. In fact, I think only Dogpile's are free.

I just don't like the name of that one, though.

There was a time when I used Ask.com (formerly known as Jeeves). I kinda liked the question format. But, alas, I'm irrevocably a Yahoo user, with a bit of Google thrown in for good measure when I really want to find out stuff.

I have a Yahoo account, and belong to and have created some YahooGroups email lists. I have a custom MyYahoo page too. But I didn't know Yahoo had a search feature like Google. Google is the default searcher in all the browsers I've used; unaware of other options except for Apple's Sherlock. BTW, you only get a Yahoo email address if you sign up for one, free or paid. I haven't.

I kind of feel stuck with google... though I honestly see them as becoming a monopoly. I also don't like how much spam get's sent out via Gmail. Drives me crazy. THe thing is though, for a business to get into Yahoo, you are required to pay for a listing "chance". And it isn't cheap. Makes me stay away from yahoo. I honestly wish there was a competetive alternative to google though.
