I'm planning to be in Milan from Dec 23-29 and am looking for tips about Milan. I can find info on all the touristic stuff online, but would like to know from locals about places or events that are not so well known or touristic.

I've read about the Navigli and Brera areas being interesting neighbourhoods - any others? Are there areas where traditional arts and crafts are still being practiced?

I notice that Dec 23 is the local derby, AC vs Inter at the San Siro - how is the fan mood usually? What's the likelihood of encountering trouble if I want to take photos of the fans before or after the match? I don't think it'll be possible to still get tickets at a reasonable price right?

Thanks in advance,
Nick

Even though I live quite far from Milan I can assure you about Navigli and Brera being interesting locations for photo opportunities (and good restaurants). You may also be find of some interest the work of Gabriele Basilico an architect and photographer who did some great job on Milano (see his book ritratti di fabbriche" - " in english should sounds like "portraits of factories").
You may also check if there is any interesting exhibits at Forma http://www.formafoto.it during your staying.
Usually the derby is quite "hot" and we had several problems about safety during soccer matches but it shouldn't be a real issue shooting some photos, at least before the match!
Anyway you can also ask Robert Blu, a very kind guy, he lives near Milan and surely can give you some useful tip. I'm not sure but I guess there are other kind italian Rff fellows living in Milan or in the nearby.
Have fun,
ciao
