Vivitar 35 ES Cleaning Questions.

Hi All,

I've just become a rf buff and acquired, via ebay some really nice rangefinders: Yashica Electro 35 GSN, Olympus XA, and a Vivitar 35 ES.

I just received my Vivitar 35 ES and although according to the auction owner, who said. ' the camera is in excellent condition, we tried it out and took it to a camera store to test it out,' I'll have to replace the light seals, which were horribly gummy and clean the battery compartment.

My question:
What do you use to clean the battery compartment? What particular liquid or cleaner? Also does any one have experience with the Vivitar 35 ES? It seems like a great camera so I'm really excited about using it.

Hi Unibrow and welcome to the forum !

I've no experience on replacing light seals yet, but I used an advice from one of the other members (Rsilfverberg) and cleaned some green battery corrosion using a q-tip soaked in normal vinegar. The camera operates well now.

You can also scratch a bit with some metal instrument on the battery contacts, but that could damage the conductive coating, so first give it a try with the vinegar and see if it cleans ok.

Good luck and let us know about how it works. I've been after a 35ES for some time, and in fact I remember that auction :)

And for those of you who haven't been to Unibrows webpage I recommend checking it out - some excellent photos there. Normally I am not a huge fan of the panoramic format but you sure made it work here!!

(It also doesn't hurt that I'm a huge fan of Chicago as well. Live in San Francisco now and this city has nothing in terms of 'soul' compared to Chicago).

The Viv 35ES is a sweet rig. You'll really like it. I just gave a Ricoh 500 G the Vinegar treatment, and the meter sprang back to life.
 
Hey! I just noticed that I'm a junior member. When and how do I become one of the big boys? Sorry to say that the images on my site are made with SLR's. However, I fully intend to start adding Rangefinder images soon.

Russ, the magic thing here is the USER CP button, with it you'll enter into your configuration page, where apart from some other things, you may add a link to your webpage, your signature (with links in html format <a href=" ">whatever</a> if you like) or your avatar (the small image below your nick in each post).

You can do that on your config page by using the Edit Profile and Edit Options links.

Remember also that you can change that "Junior Member" field by something you like better :)

Thanks! You da man. I'll try that. Actually, I don't mind the junior member designation. I though it was kinda funny. Perhaps when I own 7 dozen rf's like everyone else in here, I will graduate or move on up. As it is, I just have about 7 rf's. And way too much SLR stuff. When I first jioned, I messed up on a couple of postings, this group is configured much differently than the one that I own. It's a great group though.

Nice shot, Russ! Part of the fun and challenge in this forum is seeing what others have done and trying to figure out how it was done. Yeah, their pictures too, but I meant in using the forum features. :-D

Some benefit in letting newcomers figure it out for themselves, to earn the satisfaction of success.

I hate to say that the image was made with an SLR. However, in the very near future, I am going to print up many of my rangefinder pics. When I do, I will then be able to share with you all. Here is another SLR shot. Sorry!
