I have the CV 40mm f1.4. I have always used the hood on it when taking pictures. I was wondering how resistant to flare is it w/o the vented hood? Also, will I get less contrast. I have been thinking of using it w/o the hood, so I will more compact camera. I know I can shoot a roll of film and find out. I'm sure someone already knows the answer though. Thanks.

By now you should have finished the roll. I have found that both the SC and the MC versions are quite flare resistant. Even shooting straight into the sun will only give a "burn-out" around it, but no "veiling" flare spreading across the image.
Only problem using it without a hood is that the front element is right out there and there is a fair chance that you will pick up scratches and nicks in the front.
Very good lens and one of my M2's has one on it all the time. Perfect "walkabout" kit.

While I know it is safer to use the hood, I shot it without it fairly often and pointing it straight at bright lights. No trouble.

Sadly I sold it (at a bit of a loss) after it started to show some de-centering and the quote to fix it from the head bartender made me cringe a bit and because I need a working normal before vacation but I really, really miss it.

Cheers,
