Hi!

I have old model elmar-m 50mm and I'm thinking of buying new voigtlander nokton 50mm/f1.1. Does anyone happen to have comparison shots for these two lenses?

My old elmar is a nice lens and it is relatively sharp at 5.6 - 11 but wide open performance is something I want. I think nokton will perform better or at least equal to my old elmar at 2.8?

I recently got an oder elmar 50 2.8 and it is not nearly as sharp wide open as modern glass, though truly beautiful for portraits/people. I would imagine the Nokton will have more resolution and constrast at the wider apertures, but do you really need f1.1? its a bih hunk of glass. would the 50 1.5 not do, as this is very highly regarded, cheaper, smaller and will still perform much better than the elmar between f1.5 and 2.8 😉

I own both lenses. The Nokton is three stops faster, but much bulkier and heavier. The Elmar is sharp and absolutely distortion free. The Nokton has a very small, but visible barrel-distortion. The out of focus rendering of both lenses is completely different, but the sharpness is about the same.

Erik.

This is with the Nokton at about f/5.6:
