So, I'm doing some rangefinder shopping, and I decided the new stuff I want is the Voigtlander R3M and the 40mm 1.4. But I'm getting confused as to the mounts.

I'm unclear as to the difference in mount between the Leica M system and Leica Screwmount system. I'm also going to get an old Canon 7 off of eBay, because it uses the Leica M39 screwmount system. Would the 40mm 1.4 work on both the R3M and the Canon, or would it need to be adapted to work with the Canon?

I've read too many conflicting things. I've read the R3M uses the Leica screwmount system and the M system, and I've read the lens itself is both M and screwmount, and I've read the same of the Canon 7. And I'm beating myself senseless with the internet trying to get my mounts straight. So I'm now giving up and looking for some more interactive help.

So... would the new 40mm 1.4 fit on the old Canon 7, or would it need to be adapted, and if so, which adapter would I need/would you suggest?

Thank you for your help!

P.S. - All of my info here is based off of a couple days of research, mostly at CameraQuest. So if I do have some information wrong, please correct me.

the R3M uses M mount lenses , the 40mm 1.4 is in M mount.
the R3M can use most LTM lenses with an adapter.

the Canon 7 only uses LTM lenses and special Canon lenses like the 50mm f .95 with its built in extra bayonet mount.
the Canon 7 cannot use M mount lenses.

That's put so much simpler than anything else I've read on the 'net. Thank you. lol

So when shopping for lenses for the Canon, I should be shopping Leica Screwmount?

correct, Canon 7 = Leica Screw Mount only
or the un modifed 50mm f.95 lens
and Mirror Box 2 via the special built in
bayonet mount on the body of the Canon 7.

This is the combo I received today from CameraQuest. Ordering was very easy (I used paypal) and shipping was very fast.

Camera looks/feels and operates very very nice. Metering display absolutely rocks. My only complaint so far - shutter release should be stiffer. I wasted a couple of shots when all I wanted to do was to take meter reading.

Yeah. It seems like both of these things are so good, and they're such a good match for each other. I think I may spoil myself for Christmas. 'Cuz this summer I'm investing in a new SLR setup first.
