I've been passing this grand mansion at a great distance for many years. Finally, this week, I got close enough to record some images for posterity before it either turns to dust or meets some other sad demise.

This 30-room mansion was designed by Stanford White (of McKim, Mead & White) and built atop the foundation of a pre-existing dwelling at the same site in about 1902-03. The house been neglected since 1981. The estate is currently for sale. Preservationists have recently tried to rekindle interest in saving the house.

were you able to successfully sneak in?
Did you find any hidden basement and hidden passage?
That's exciting, I want to join you.
You may find a chest of gold buried somewhere (or a body)!

Yeah man, I'd love to snoop around that mansion all day long.

I have no idea why, but I just love grand ruins.

Excellent photo's, Rob. Glad you didn't get ravaged for trespassing by some wild eyed house guest in a corset and nightgown.

There looks to be a female face peering through one of the windows...

I don't do that. If there's a "trespassing sign," is there is the front door of this place, I don't trespass. Also, this home is such disrepair that I think it's dangerous. Call me a wimp if you like. But, I simply don't trespass. I do pictures from a safe remove and I will get as close as I can without crossing the line, but I do abide the law.

One of my great worries here is attracting dummies to places like this who think they can do as they please, committing acts of vandalism. I know of one former estate like this that was burned to the ground, probably unintentionally -- but does intent really matter, by some vandals. I would hate to see that happen here.

This home happens to be bordered by a National Park on one side and locally-owned public land on another.

I DO NOT encourage or condone trespassing.

Sorry Rob, I didn't mean it to appear as if I were accusing you of doing anything illegal. It was just intended as a Halloween spoof.

Excellent thread. I hope I haven't somehow derailed it.

The problem is that the town and county already did the same with the property next door to this one with intent of restoring it. That project has run into both political and financial difficulties. Here's some shots of that estate.

From a distance it looks nice...

But up close, you can see that ravages of tme and neglect...

Sounds like the town/county should pick up that property and restore it as a preserve with a location like that... Too bad Jersey's broke.

To answer everyone's questions:

No, I did not see any ghosts.

No, I did not go into any underground tunnels.

Yes,I did find the buried gold and will be going back tomorrow with my carriage pulled by six white horses to haul it to my castle.

Yes, I will report the gold to the IRS as income.

Yes, there are werewolves in the forest behind the house.

Yes, I was bitten by one of the werewolves. This should explain my rather hirsute appearance.

I got it that both of you guys were spoofing me and I am not the least bit bothered by it. However, there is a very real risk of people getting the wrong idea and thinking it's okay to trespass at will. Some of these same folks do perfectly idiotic things like spraying painting graffiti and making bonfires at properties like this.

I'm far too old to be calling my parents to bail me out of the hoosegow for adolescent indiscretions and I'm not quite sure my wife or kids would think twice about letting me spend a night behind bars. And who could blame them.😉

Taken with my M8 and zeiss biogon 28mm.

Bye!

This is a castle that is registered as "historic moument" and obviously deserves to be preserved. Unfortunately, since the eightlies, this neo-classic castle (the plans were drawn by Viollet Le Duc, a renowned french 19th century architect) is gently but surely becoming a ruin. Anyone rich gentleman to buy it and save it before it is too late ? (more pictures if you like, tell me)
