Has anyone ever noticed? WD-40 oil spray has a slightly sweet aroma to it. I have a good quality workroom chair, made by a local kibbutz. Just yesterday, noticing that it was loose and shaky, I turned it over. The next half hour was spent in pulling fibres and rubber bands out of the wheels, tightening everything up by hand and with a wrench, and spraying a bit of WD-40 into the wheels.

The good feeling of Maintenance well done, along with the slightly sweet aroma of WD-40, lingered in the room for the next few hours.

Cheers, mike

I love the WD-40 aroma.
But apparently it is a degreaser (indeed, over time it degreases). Finding real grease that keeps on greasing is very hard. I remember reading something on that... But I do know that WD-40 dryes up very fast and it acts adversely over time.

I hate the smell, and it gives me a headache. WD-40 is mis-used 90% of the time, I think. It is good for cleaning quite often, but not for lubrication. WD stands for Water Displacent, and it displaces just about everything else as well.

For lubrication (but not on cameras) I use something called Marvel Mystery Oil. It was formulated as a top cylinder lubricant for automotive applications, but I use it as a general lubricant. I don't know if it's available outside the US.

It is pinkish in colour and has a wonderful pepperminty smell.

When I need to lubricate door hinges, sliding door tracks and such to get rid of squeaks, I generally use a silicone spray.

that is not entirely true . i have used wd-40 to clean and spruce up old graflex 4x5's quite a few times . the stuff does wonders getting off 50 years of gunk and grime . i actually made money on these camera s buying them off eb@y giving them a good wd-40 clean and relisting .

It is not something that you would use on a camera.

LOL 😱
Some good suggestions above; Silicon Spray appeals to me.
The WD-40 sprayed into the plastic wheels of the chair will not hurt them, but
with the hot, dry climate in Jerusalem... it will dry up sooner than I like. I've heard of Marvel Mystery Oil, and this and Silicon Spray may be available in the auto accessory shops nearby.
Cheers & thanks,
mike

WD-40 is a solvent and its intended use is to loosen stuck parts such as a rusted bolts, stuck hinges, and the caps of other WD-40 cans. 😛

I don't think using it in a camera is a good idea at all. Even if you avoid spraying it where you don't want it the fumes will start to break down any oil, foam (light seals), adhesive and possibly rubber that they "waft" into contact with.
