Weird, weird bokeh.

I noticed the odd doubling of horizontals (see the middle background object in the attached) in a few shots on my last roll through the Hexar AF. The lens is reputed to be a Summicron clone: does that happen with the real thing, too?

I don't have a Cron to test but I've seen similar things happening (the objects out of focus were railroad tracks) with my Sonnar 50/1.5 wide open.

To sum up, I seriously think bokeh is like fire, when you think you have it controlled, it lets you know that it's clearly NOT the case.

Or what is the same, any lens can give good/bad oof in different conditions, so it's our task to try to spot those conditions and look for / try to avoid them.

And let me add, despite the double vision thing, I like that portrait.

Thanks, Taffer. I can certainly touch it up if I'd like, too, so it's not a big deal, but it is interesting. In other shots, it's folks in the background who end up like that.

Of course, it's only camera guys who really look at that sort of thing, too.

The Hexar Af is not a summicron clone. That said, that's a great photo. Stop obscessing.

Ah, I'd often heard it was. And thanks very much.

(Not that I really was, anyway.)

Thanks!

I don't have the negs here to check, but it's got to be: otherwise the scanner's gone suddenly all funny. I'll look tomorrow.

Sorry M. It's not you that gets my goat. It's people who would knock a wonderful photo because of some perceived flaw.

(Now, who's obsessing?)

That's a weird sub-set of photography enthusiast, eh? It's all about impact for me, with technical perfection well in second place.

Thanks, Nick, I thought it was just me that couldn't see anything wrong with that photo.

Hey, thanks.

That's Fuji Superia 200 (about C$2/roll, at the supermarket), if anyone wondered.

I really like that photo! I see what you mean, though. But, come on! The composition and light of this photo are strong enough to let your mind at ease.

Scan from negative or print, btw?

Thank you.

Oh, I won't sweat it: the fiddly stuff is just for us freaks to pass the time; it's all in the moment and the light.

That's from neg, on a Coolscan 8000.

Wonderful light quality in that photo, Merciful. The double lines only give bokeh geeks like us something else to talk about. In this case, it does nothing to distract from an excellent portrait.

Thanks, Robert. As you know, there's nothing quite like the light you find. To me, it adds an aspect of fun to making portraits: the excitement of wandering into the right light, or seeking it.

Cool. Now I know what to ask Santa (and he'll say "ho ho ho ho!!!")

Hmmm, a Canon 5D or a Nikon Coolscan 8000 / 9000 ?

Beautiful light! A great picture like this easily overcomes any (perceived) technical shortcomings.

Thanks a lot, Frank.

I need to cut back on coffee or something... my shots from that camera were sharp ... but the this one and the one you posted a while back are amazing.
