Calling Photographers in Westminster

New Gallery in Victoria announces
PHOTOGRAPHIC COMPETITION

In February 2006 a new art gallery is opening in Victoria, London with a debut show entitled, Westminster Connections. This show will document and celebrate the immense diversity of the people who live or work in the South Westminster area. The exhibition will highlight the connections these people have to Westminster – the characters, the place, the buildings.

Five photographers are required to fulfil the brief for this exhibition. They will be chosen through competition and the work that is made in response to the exhibition brief, will be the exhibition. Once hung, one of the five photographers will be selected to receive the first prize – a commission to work on a photographic project. The competition is restricted to those photographers who live, work or study within Westminster or who have studied within Westminster. Please see below for full details.

Gallery: The SW1 Gallery is set within Cardinal Place, a new Land Securities Development on Victoria Street. This 3000 sq ft space is impressive both in its position at the centre of Cardinal Place and interior which is fully fitted out so that it is a wonderful place in which to exhibit work.

The Project: The South Westminster area between the parks and the River Thames encompasses a community and environment that are both vibrant and diverse - parliament, cafes, restaurants, markets, government buildings, cathedrals, barracks, houses, theatres, flats, offices, palaces – and all the people who live, work or study there. This area offers an inordinately rich subject matter for a photographer and will be a fascinating central theme for Westminster Connections.

Competition Details

1. Eligible Photographers: This competition is open to photographers who live, work or study in Westminster at present or who have previously studied photography within the borough.

2. Style: We are looking for documentary style photographs to capture the wide cross-section of residents and workers in the South Westminster area.

3. Subject Matter: The gallery will provide a certain number of subjects for the photographers (eg. politician, soldier, church leader, asylum seeker, community policeman, refugee etc) but then the photographers themselves will be expected to get a feel for the community and make their own choice of subjects. This show aims at being a celebration of the area rather than a penetrating social documentary.

4. Submission: Please submit up to 15 images – high resolution on cd with accompanying print outs or if unable to provide a cd, then the same number of prints or transparencies. The choice of images sent is up to the individual – they can be of anywhere, anytime, anyplace - but do take into consideration that the ultimate brief is based on people and places. Also include a full biography. If you would like the images returned, please enclose a stamp/addressed envelope.

5. Contact Details: Send all material to Kate Pierrepont, Land Securities, Portland House, Stag Place, London SW1E 5BH – for any further details call Kate Pierrepont, Gallery Manager – 020 7963 4014. Work needs to be submitted by 4th November.

6. Competition: The work will be judged by a selection committee. From the submission, 5 photographers will be chosen who will then meet, discuss the project and work over a period of two-three days during the end of November/beginning December.

7. Awards: Each photographer will receive £500 which includes cost of film and preliminary visuals. Final printing and presentation will be paid for by the gallery. The work will be hung and then on the evening of the opening reception, the winner will be chosen – he/she will receive a commission to work on a project for Land Securities, the leading property developer in Europe and the company behind both the Cardinal Place Development and the SW1 Gallery itself.
