Well, I have two OM-2 bodies on the way and suppose they will be more useful with lenses :D. What are considered to be the best lenses in the OM system???

Thanks,,,.... John

Congrats!! Welcome to the Zuikoland. I smell another long long thread with sample pics from us Zuikoholics.

I do love my 50/1.4 and others, but I'll push 85/2 (some say version 2 or 3 are sharper, I have ver. 2).

A few sample shots.

A minimum must have kit is 28/2 and 50/1.8 MIJ.

Add an 85/2 or Series I 90/2.5 and you are set :) Like this

Nice photos Sug, a fast 50 and a nice 85 would be a good start. How do I determine which version a lens is? Is it identified by serial number?

Roland, that is a sharp kit you have. A wide 28 would be a nice addition and almost round out a kit. I might want to add a 135 or 200 for wildlife or other far away stuff....

Thank you for your replies,
John

Of the obtainable lenses (2/21 and 2/90 are just too hard to find)

2/28 Only covet the Zeiss Contax Hollywood more.
2/85MC I prefer the Later MC version. Some like the old "silvernose".
unhearalded 3.5/55 macro. only 1:2 but makes a perfect walk around lens for the summer months and can be found for peanuts.
I don't love the longer Zuikos. Tried the 2.8/180 and found it flat compared to the Contax (which is usually cheaper).
I use all my Zuikos on a 5D rather than film:eek:

The 35mm f2 is issential IMO ... that and the 50mm f1.4 ... not to mention the 85mm f2! :D

The 28/2 is an awesome lens on the OM. Highly recommended.
I have a 50/1.8 but would rather use a rangefinder for this focal length... I want to get the macro as I have heard this is a great lens.
The 100/2.8 is a great lens and I have loved the photos produced... the size of this lens makes it a must have in my bag.

No serious birdwatcher will ever leave home without the 400mm... ;-)

More seriously, you'll have to define what YOU need - even the best lens is no good if it is unsuitable for the things you do or has a focal length you dislike...

A number of OM focal lengths are available as f2.0 and f2.8 versions. The 2.0's go for a substantial premium compared to their plebeian brothers. For example, KEH lists an BGN-grade 24/2 at $449 and an E-grade 24/2.8 at $159.

i use a 50/1.4 and a 35/2 on my OM-2N. I also have a 135/2.8, bought cheap, that I use very infrequently.

Hey John,

if you like to add something a little longer, I very much recommend the 180/2.8. Or one of the non-Zuiko 80-200/2.8 zooms (I have the Tokina ATX one). They are great.

Cheers,

Roland.

If there was only 1 Zuiko I could have it would be the 40/2. That lens is soooo good.

As far as I'm concerned there really aren't a lot of other lenses worth owning. I've had the 18/3.5, 21/2, 21/3.5, 40/2, 50/1.8, 50/1.2, 55/1.2 and 100/2.8. I've also used the 100/2.

Very subjective this. My personal favourites (in no particular order):

100mm f2.8: (particularly lovely results, very compact and well made);
50mm f1.4;
50mm f3.5 macro;
28mm f2.8;
135mm 3.5.

Still very good, but I'm slightly less fond of:
24mm f2.8;
35mm f2.8;
50mm f1.8;
35-70mm f3-5/4.5;
85-250mm f5;
21mm f3.5.

Alas I've never had any of the top-flight f2 range...

Regards,
D.

I'm pretty spoiled Zuiko wise, having acquired a lot of the primo OM Zuikos some years ago -- 21 f2.0, 24 shift, 28 f2.0, 35 f2.0, 50 f2.0 macro, 90 f2.0 macro, 100 f2.0, and 35-80 f2.8 zoom. More recently acquired 24 f2.8 (NMC), 50 f1.8 MIJ, 50 f3.5 macro and 75-150 zoom. My favorites among them are the 35-80 zoom, 28 f2.0, and 50 f2.0macro, although I do like and use all of them (and the Vivitar Series 1 28-90, 90 f2.5 macro and 70-210 f2.8-4.0 Komine), except that I haven't used the 24 Shift for the last few years, since I'm always worried about damaging its huge and gorgeous front element.
The 35-80 is likely the best zoom of its type, the 28 f2.0 has a very sharp but liquid quality to its images, and the 50 f2.0 macro has incredible sharpness and bokeh.
I was recently very tempted to acquire a 250 f2.0 that was being offered for sale by John Hermanson. However, the $2100 price and the fact that I would rarely ever use it brought me to my senses.

Yet another vote for the 85/2. The 35/2.8 and 200/5 for size to round out the kit. Almost nothing to carry yet yields a lot of punch.
